Please Help. In need of a White or Soft Pink Climber.

Hi,

I have been searching HMF for a white to soft pink climber for over a week with no success, and I know that while a website is helpful, it cannot replicate the voice of the experienced gardeners on this forum. So I am reaching out to you all, for help in finding this rose. And of course, it is the last one I need for my garden as I have everything else I need on order or in pots, and I am totally and utterly stumped.

Here's what I need for the space:

Color: white, or a very soft pink ( it cannot be cotton candy or baby pink). If it has white with pink, lilac, or some sort of lavender that would be great too. A pink with lavender or lilac tones would also be nice .

Size: no more than about 10' by 6 -8'

Repeat bloom : good

Here is the problem, I believe: it needs to tolerate open shade and some total shade for most of the day, ( it will receive about 4 hours of direct sunlight) and be heat tolerant.

Preferences: thornless, or just not out for blood.

P.S. A tall, upright, but not bushy rose would suffice too.

This is the rose we will see from the dining room.

Lynn

Here's a couple Austins that are very pastel pink/white and quite lovely. The pictures show them as much pinker than they actually are in my garden where I would actually call them white with a hint of pastel pink in the center. They are in the 8-10 ft range and very disease resistant. Whether they would like as much shade as you are offering, I don't know. You will have to do some more research on that aspect.

St. Swithin

The Wedgwood

I have never grown the following rose, but it is often mentioned on this forum as being first-rate. Whether it tolerates part shade, I don't know. It is worth looking at, at any rate.
Sombreuil Climbing

Hope that helps.

Have you looked at Mme Joseph Schwartz? It is an old tea rose - they like heat, and in your climate probably would get about the size you mention; perhaps the height would be more like 8 feet than 10. It is a sport of Duchesse de Brabant, which gets that big in my garden. My MJS is smaller, but it thrives in partial shade - it only gets maybe 1-2 hours of direct sun, so it should do great with a whole 4 hours!

It is white with a light pink sort of overcast on some of the blooms. Very elegant growth habit, like all of the teas.

My first thought was Cl. Sombreuil, for it is a wonderful rose, with great fragrance, and excellent disease resistance.

Then, I got to the part about no, or few, thorns. Cl. Sombreuil is liberally endowed with vicious prickles.

I still think it's one of the loveliest roses ever, but probably not what you want.

Dublinbay, thank you for the suggestions. I will look up the two Austin's. I grew Sombreuil many years ago in a different garden for two seasons. It is a very beautiful rose that I had to remove because of the size and my planting it in a space that couldn't accommodate its vigorous growth. It was grafted and my fear would be that eventually I would see similar growth. It would be gorgeous in the space:(

Jacqueline3, I plan to add a DbB to another part of my garden. I like the continuity in design etc., but subtle variation that many of the sports can add to gardens. You're description is invaluable. I wish that HMF had specificity by region, but then this forum's members fill in where it stops. I will research it too! It seems as though it could be perfect for the space.

Well...I feel as though I shouldn't really be suggesting this...but what about Cl. Iceberg? It IS thornless, and it does bloom a lot...

Renae. Good rose for your shady conditions, and fairly thornless.

Or else Annie Laurie McDowell.

But I think I would try Renae first, simply because I know it will not mind only 4 hours of sun a day. I have no experience with ALM in shady conditions.

Here is a link that might be useful: Renae

Mine is still in a pot, so I know nothing firsthand, but what about White Maman Cochet, climbing?

zjw727, Ironically, I
have a climbing iceberg there now. I have been in the process of replacing everything in that area with Fragrant OGR's and Austin's.

Kstrong, I have an Annie Laurie McDowell in the corner by the gate and fear that it has the potential of becoming too large for the space. I will definitely research Renae.

Floridarosez9, I will definitely research Maman Cochet too. I have no visual memory of this rose, but I recall it being highly recommended by members of this forum.

Thank you all for the suggestions :)

I would avoid Sombreuil, not only for the heavy weaponry it carries, but also because it is going to get way, way larger than you want.

Mme Joseph Schwartz is a very good suggestion - will not get too big and tolerates a lot of shade. Cl White Maman Cochet gets pretty big.

I second Renae and also suggest Clair Matin. Good luck with whatever you choose. Shelley
