I have an area where I would like to plant a hedge of Molineux roses. This rose seems rather tame from the many photos I have seen on the internet, but I know that can be deceiving. How big is this rose for the people growing it in California? This seems to be the best yellow in my search for a yellow rose that is heat tolerant. Is there a better yellow rose that I missed? Thanks.. :)

I posted some info about a heat tolerant yellow rose in the thread on Floribunda Suggestions in the Rose forum. I was discussing Julia Child which is, of course, not an Austin or OGR. Though I'm not in Norcal, it gets pretty darn hot here. As far as Austins go, I think Golden Celebration is plenty heat tolerant, and blooms constantly for me--maybe not on the level of JC, but GC is always in bloom. GC does get large, but I don't know your size requirements. To illustrate Julia's heat tolerance, here is a photo taken on July 30 when it was 102 degrees. This rose is always in bloom, and I don't mean one or two blooms, either. Diane

We grow Molineux, Julia Child and Walking on Sunshine in Socal near the coast. Our highest temps get to be no more than 85 degrees, so maybe a direct comparison is not perfect. Molineux is a relatively narrow bush (3' tall x 2' wide) so you will have to plant them closer than most roses to form a hedge. The color is nice, the bush is prolific but the flowers do shatter fairly fast. Walking on Sunshine is very prolific and about 3' tall x 3' wide here. Holds it color well if it gets enough water. Julia Child can be 5' x 5' here. Ours is own root and only 2 yrs. old so she is just 3' x 2.5' so far. But here is a pic of her at Exposition park in downtown Los Angeles on a hot (90+) summer day. Good luck with your search!

Here is Walking on Sunshine at Palos Verdes botanical gardens in April. This rose is shorter than Julia Child and prolific as well. I don't know how tall you want your hedge to be so maybe it's too short? I don't have any pics of our Molineux bush but at the same Palos Verdes botanical gardens 3 Molineux bushes planted together look like one Julia Child in my previous post.

My 'Molineux's are about 5' wide and 8' tall. I hard prune to keep them that short. They are long established. 8+ years. Julia Child is somewhat smaller. They are both good yellows. 'Molineux' has very quick repeat. JC is better than average but 'Molineux' is even faster. If you want a real heat lover 'St Patrick' is happy with heat.

I forgot to mention that my Julias are about 6'X6', and since she's always in bloom, there is no down time. Golden Celebration is about 6 1/2' X 5', Here is GC. Diane

It is REALLY tough to know which yellow to chose. They are all so incredibly beautiful! I am leaning toward Molineux because of its repeat, heat tolerance, and one other thing, I read it has very few prickles. Is this right? This hedge will be by my swimming pool. Hoovb, I read on your blog that your Molineux was rather large. I wonder if my growing conditions will be like yours. Do you ever have any frost days? I get a few, but never enough to really knock the leaves off of the roses. In the same space, I have three oleander standards. Their topiary will eventually clear my six foot fence, so I would like the yellow rose hedge to reach up to the oleander or come close. I wish I had a bigger yard! :)
