Hey y'all. I am trying to decide between Ducher, Buff Beauty and Gruss An Achen to go on each side of main stairs leading on to my deck. It gets morning sun and about 2 hours of afternoon filtered sun. Rebloom is important for that spot and fragrance would be a bonus. I would appreciat hearing everyone's experiences with these roses and in particular how they do in Texas. Thanks!

I am in Oklahoma, and do not have experience with Buff Beauty, but have grown Ducher and Gruss An Achen as well as the pink sport. I love Ducher. It blooms well, is about 5 ft. tall, and not real wide. I used to grow the Gruss roses until I stopped spraying. Once they never received fungicide, they weakened. I did not find occasional black spot that offensive, but it hurt the roses (I think). I am not sure how they would do now in a garden where spray is never used. There could be a difference between removing spray from a rose, and growing a rose that never is sprayed. Ducher does not get any disease in my garden. I grow two together and love them. Sadly I cannot enjoy the fragrances that well. (It is an age thing.) Sammy

I agree that 'Gruss an Aachen' would need spraying in E. Texas. It is highly susceptible to blackspot. It does have excellent fast repeat bloom, perfect shrub habit, and few thorns, which would be desirable in that location. 'Buff Beauty' is a big plant that would want to be 6' or more wide as a shrub. How about one of the SDLM family?

I don't live in Texas and have only grown Buff Beauty so your experience might be different. For me, BB is enormous. It flowers in spring and fall when the days are a little cooler, taking a break when it's really hot. The flowers are lovely but I can't imagine, even with careful pruning that it would ever fit in the same space as the other roses you mentioned. It also has thorns, something to keep in mind if it's by a stairway or often used sidewalk.

Also not in Texas but my truss stays about 2.5 feet tall and I forget she is there because of a low fence. I plan on moving her this fall. One plus is that she roots fairly easily

My Grusses are usually between 3' and 4'.

I have only grown Ducher. When I lived in the Dallas area, I grew it in full sun and it was propbably under 4 ft. tall. I found it to be fragrant only some of the time, probably based upon weather conditions. Here in Houston I have grown it in more shade than sun. It can grow much taller here - more like 6 feet after several years - and I have found it to be more fragrant than in Dallas conditions. It has been healthy and a regular bloomer in both locations.

Hey, Boncrow, I have a baby Ducher, propagated from an ARE plant. If you don't mind starting from a baby, I'll be happy to share--feel free to e-mail.

Sammy, Michael, Kippy, plantlover and Bluegirl.....thank you all for your informative responses. I think Ducher is going to be the way to go for me. My deck is fairly tall so it can grow as tall as it wants too. I don't need a BS magnet because I'm not going to spray. Sounds like Ducher has a good rebloom and is fragrant and does well in Texas. Thanks so much y'all! Bluegirl I sent you a email, thanks!

Hello. I know I'm jumping in late. But I wanted to give a shout out to Ducher. I live 1 hour south of Dallas, just outside of Ft Worth. I have two Duchers that are both about 3 years old. They are 4 ft x 4 ft and they re-bloom frequently. I get a mild fragrance from them in Spring. I just want to warn you that it is not a strong or wafting fragrance. A Ducher bush covered in white blooms is a beautiful thing to behold. Ducher did get beat up by the ice storms of last winter, but they are recovering nicely. Still a little thinner from cane loss. But in average Texas winters they recover nicely. A beautiful bush. I use one next to a blush Knockout and the other next to a bright yellow Nacgadoches Rose (Grandma's Yellow rose). |

Shopshops, I'm located a hour and half east of Houston and about 4 hours south of Dallas. Since they will have afternoon shade I am going to plant impatiens or vinca in bright colors to go with them, there is only room for one rose on each side of my steps. I bet yours looks some kind of pretty with your Nacodoches. I have Nacodoches and it is one of my best roses. I have strike it rich next to Nac and they compliment each other very well. Thanks for chiming in on Ducher, I am very excited to be planing this rose. I also have 2 other spots that I plan on planting them and I may have to think about pairing them with another Nacodoches lol.
