It seems the General Schabilkine I ordered decided to die rather than move to CA so I need to pick a replacement and the other roses I want are not available til spring. Any thoughts on: Amazone Mademoiselle Franziska Kruger Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne Isabella Sprunt Or should I get a Bermuda Anna Oliver and compare to Jackie's Anna Oliver should I find one Or Cels Multiflore Or ? Thank you
Here is a link that might be useful: the list

Comtesse Emmelne and Isabella mutually refused to grow, here. (Safrano has never been good here, either.) I haven't grown Freddy Kruger.
RE: Help me pick
| | |
Jeri I was going to wait and ask you this weekend but did your Safrano ever do much growing? Mine is purple with new growth right now. I had stayed away from her sports and seedlings but am now wondering about that
RE: Help me pick

Hmm they have both Anna Oliver and Etoile de Lyon listed. HMC lists the latter as also the Bermuda Anna Oliver. Maybe that will be the winner

If you can't get a Jesse Hildreth this weekend as you mentioned, Kippy, maybe opt for Devoniensis or Mme. Bravy? Or Niphetos if that's a white tea you enjoy. I would generally go for something I can't get on the West Coast from RU, so perhaps one of the Viraraghavan teas? I don't know much about them aside from the HMF entries, but some are quite lovely. Remembering Cochet is probably my favorite looking bloom of the bunch, but asking Pat Henry about them would be your best bet besides a thread here. Jay
RE: Help me pick
| | |
Ack my long reply vanished but do you have any experience with those Jay?
RE: Help me pick

Cels Multiflore is lovely but really looks much more like a China (more tall and narrow, with small, narrow leaves) and developed blackspot in my garden. Mademoiselle Kruger can be a real diva and many people (including me) have not done well with her. Ingrid

I have avoided Cels Multiflora because it is stigmatized as a mildewer. Likewise, Devoniensis is often mentioned in relationship to mildew. Etoile de Lyon, here, was absolutely disease-proof. (That would be, free of mildew and rust.) The outer petals can be damaged by damp weather, but if you remove them, the bloom opens undamaged. Safrano has died for me twice. I'm not trying again. (Isabella Sprunt never got over 6 inches here.)

I agree with Jay - try to get your hot little hands on Jesse Hildreth this weekend! Jeri's picks make me weak at the knees! Alas, I doubt he'll ever make it to Australia, so I'll have to live vicariously through you lot :)
RE: Help me pick

Muscovy -- There are so many roses y'all have in Australia that WE can't get -- I sympathize with your frustration. Jeri
RE: Help me pick

No one on the west coast with Amazone have any input? These are ones that are not Nabonnand unless I missed it and are east coasters: Tipsy Imperial Concubine Souvenir d'Elise Vardon (HMF says Kruger too) Etoile de Lyon (I will double check but I guess this is their Anna Oliver too) Souvenir de Francois Gaulain? Perle des Jardins Niphetos Duchesse d'Albe If I want a Nabonnand I can get Kruger? Or just get 2 Anna Yungs
RE: Help me pick

Muscovy, once these roses get big enough to bloom and not lay on the ground, I plan to pester people with photos at every chance I get! I have lights, my studio space is just waiting a repair on the other side of the wall and the floor can go in and boy....watch out. lol

Kippy, you are saving a hole for Schmidt's Smooth Yellow, aren't you? I will likely be driving out to Jeri's probably around Wednesday of next week. If you'll be down closer to Camarillo, I can bring it out and you can meet me there to pick it up. Kim

I was going to email you.

Oh man, it looks like a longer reply I made earlier -or thought I did- didn't get posted either, Kippy! I haven't yet grown any of the white teas or Viraraghavan teas I mentioned. It's hard to find any information or pictures of most of them, let alone the plants themselves, but some of them look very worth growing. Several of the Viraraghavan teas have Safrano in the heritage for what it's worth. I am very interested in growing Mme. Bravy someday, but I have yet to get around to ordering it since it's an "East Coast Tea." If you wanted to "replace" General Schablikine, perhaps Monsieur Tillier is the choice even though it's available on this coast? If RU has Boule de Neige available and you're really looking for a white rose, I would heartily recommend it. It may not be a tea, but it is fragrant, perfectly healthy, floriferous, and most of the shrubs of it I've seen are nicely upright and large. Jay

Yep Jeri and Kippy, Forbidden Rose Lust is the worst! I look forward to your pics Kippy :)

Jay, I have Mme. Bravy (was from Vintage) and I like her a lot. She is a moderate grower (4' x 3' in 5 years, slow but steady) and blooms a lot -- among the faster repeaters and repeats well even in this dry year with reduced irrigation. She tends to have sprays of nodding blooms, 3" or so in diameter. A bit of mildew in the worst part of the year for that when younger but much less of it now that she is older. Nice tea scent.
RE: Help me pick

I decided that unless the Etoile de Lyon was different from the Anna Oliver that I would pick "Freddy Kruger" Jay, I am also very interested in the Viraraghavan teas and some day if I have a space I might order and put together. But they are all newer and patented so that means I really can't share and one big goal for the garden is being able to share. Because I fall for the whole "collection" thing and there are more teas than I have space for, I decided to do the inner tea circle in just Nabonnand roses. The others will go on the outside of that circle and around the rest of the garden by the street hedge. If they devour the hedge so be it :) They will be on the sunny side of the hedge and I don't pick the guavas anyway. I am kind of heavy on the white teas as it is, so a few of the icebergs may find themselves being used for cuttings material and replaced with a tea. But first to get a Jesse!

Mademoiselle Franziska Kruger that was a total disaster here. Flowers never opened.
RE: Help me pick

Same here, Hoov. Addiction to mildew was the fatal flaw. That nightmare was hacked up and dumped into the trash truck. Good riddance. Kim
