We have several old, untended mature Perle d'Or plants in old gardens in our neighborhood. I have never seen one that blows its petals -they mostly behave the same way Cecile Brunner does.

So, I would guess that this behavior, like much rose (or person!) behavior, is because it is a baby, and is something it will grow out of.

A combination of both, Susan. It should improve with more maturity, but very hot, brilliant, sunny and particularly arid conditions will rapidly speed the "blowing" of most blooms. Some are worse than others. The smaller, narrower, thinner and more "papery" the petal, the worse the "blow." More fragrant blooms traditionally fit into the "thinner, more papery" petal types, and are often fast to blow. Not "always" and you can find examples which don't fit the "rule", but in general you will find this the case. Kim

Ok. Thanks you all! I had planned on putting Comtesse du Cayla next to my Perles but I may wait and see...
This time of year the sun is lower, less humidity...so yes, the sun has been brilliant. All my blooms look like jewels. But she just drops petals in a day.

I've spent a lot of time observing Perle d'Or in full furnace-like sun in my garden and in the Sacramento cemetery and have never thought that the blooms "blow." As they fade, others are opening close behind.

Comtesse du Cayla, for me, tends to burn at the edges in full sun. The one in the cemetery is in a plot that often floods when we irrigate (it's in a low spot) and the flowers last longer. At home, where I water more sparingly, the flowers scorch quicker. I find it very annoying on an othewise lovely plant.

Well, Anita...dang..Mine just aren't lasting. However, they are in my driest bed...I have lots of pretty buds but the flowers just are shot in one day. I will try to get a photo today.
