I was so excited to find out at the last minute last night that our local botanical garden was having a plant sale today! Lucky me, right? I even had a chance to look at the list of roses before hand so I could investigate everything from home. Most of the choices were on the large side, so I only came home with one: Gilbert Nabonnand. It looks like I just missed a fabulous flush because there was a lot to deadhead, but everything I've read about this rose seems positive. I'm excited! There will be more roses available at the March sale, but here is what was available today (for inquiring minds): Alister Stella Gray Someone had an inside track to full-price selections and had snagged a Madame Lombard and Clothilde Soupert that were not officially for sale. Darn you, insiders! However, I got everything I went there to get, and a couple extra, so all-in-all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning.

BTW, I can only assume that Mme. Anoinette Rebe is actually a typo and should actually be Mme. Antoine Rebe, since I couldn't find anything at all on the former. Does anyone know if Mme. Antoine Rebe has a little sister? :)

Congratulations! Those are often some of the greatest sales! I learned many years ago, if you honestly want to enjoy them most, become one of the "insiders". I'm sure they could use an enthusiastic volunteer. You'd probably pick up an incredible education and have a ball doing it. Learning propagation and producing all those cutting grown roses for many years at The Huntington Library was an amazing, fun experience. The people met, the tremendous rose collection possible to study and satisfaction of getting old, rare and unusual roses spread around into loving hands while helping support the institution were wonderful. If you are able, I think you might find it well worth your effort. I did. Kim

Kim, they definitely love volunteers there. I definitely see that in my future; what a great way to learn! Also, my husband and I got married there, so I could never tire of seeing it.

That's neat! Congratulations! Kim
