All this since spring? Maybe a flame thrower would be an idea? Just kidding, I know nothing about this rose but have the vague idea that it's not an overly enthusiastic bloomer, albeit the flowers are beautiful. I hope it's not wickedly thorny.

A flame thrower is the only thing that is going to stop it. It's just a once bloomer. Everyone talks about Mermaid's prickles but I'd take them over this wickedness any day!

This rose will very quickly outgrow this location. My advice is to cut out canes to keep the rose fairly thin and easily attached to the fence in an espalier style. You can even cut off most of the canes after it flowers in the spring, and keep the basals each year so the rose is newer and less dense. As far as shortening and keeping the rose actually smaller and shorter, you will be fighting a losing battle.

Get good leather gloves and wear long pants and long sleeves when working with ramblers.

Ok this is great info. I don't want to keep it smaller or shorter I guess I just want to make it look like something other than just 3 15 foot canes...I posted over in my Zepphie question about pruning Schonste so that it becomes a bush. It seems I want to promote basal growth but I think that is up to the rose?
My other ramblers are really putting out the basals!
Since it started bare root this Spring the heftiness of the canes is a bit terrifying...
I have planned for 12 ft of width and I am going to have to attach something to the top of the 8ft fence for height.
Mendocino suggested wickets and I am currently researching that. You all are invaluable.
