Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

I didn't know such beauty could exist!
I am writing this post now because I can't help myself.
I'm completely head over heels for this rose, it is the most perfect rose in the world.
I think this is it, it's TRUE LOVE.
When I arrive home from work, I rush to open the door to the dog, and next, the dog jumping at my heels, I head to Souvenir de la Malmaison.... and I take a deep breath, and inhale, and I almost faint with joy because its fragrance is INDESCRIBABLY beautiful.
Sigh. I need look no further, my rose and I we have found each other.

What a great tribute to a lovely rose!

She should be a great performer in your climate as well. Next you need to get the SdlM sports 'Mme. Cornelissen' and 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria'. They are similar plants to Malmaison but with different flower form and slightly different color. There are deeper pink relatives that are maybe not quite as good, but worth planting. I have 'Capitaine Dyel de Graville'. Also in the USA we have a version of SdlM that holds up better in cool rain--'Mystic Beauty'. 'Souvenir de St. Annes' is a semi-double version with strong spice fragrance.

Is this what you are talking about?

Actually, that is Mystic Beauty, but it is identical to, or so nearly identical to, Souvenir de la Malmaison that most people cannot tell the difference. You'll have to excuse my camera--brings out more of the pink than is usually seen on the actual bush.

Always blooming beautifully in my garden! And disease-resistant. No wonder you fell in love with this exceptional rose! : )

Annalyssa, Thank you so much. It's so sweet of you to share your love of this rose. I felt happy just reading it. I love it too and the others related are all in my garden.

RE: Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

I adore Souvenir de la Malmaison also.

RE: Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

The historical significance or lore of Malmaison is fascinating.

My Capitaine Dyel de Graville was delivered today! I was so
excited after waiting a month. It is now adjacent to Souvenir
de la Malmaison.

michaelg, do you have any advice on what this sport likes?

labrea has posted photos & tidbits about his Capitaine Dyel de Graville. Other than that, there seems to be little information.

Anyone else have this rare sport?

You would like many of the bourbon roses. There are so many wonderful ones.

It was wonderful to read your enthusiastic and happy post. It is a great rose that has given me much pleasure and very little trouble. My favorite sport of it is Mme. Cornelissen although I also have Kronprinzessin Viktoria, which is also a very good rose. It must be my nose and possibly also the very low humidity here but the fragrance for me is not hugely strong. La France next to it has a much stronger fragrance for me, but I'm glad yours is powerfully fragrant.

Everything I've read about this rose said "Buy Me" so I bought a band of it this year. I planted and pampered and, despite temps in the mid to upper 90's, it rewarded me with three blooms! Granted, they were small because of the heat but man oh man did they smell GREAT! Wow! I can't wait for next year's Spring Flush!

I see I'm not alone. :)
This is her this morning....

Ingrid, I have read the fragrance is quite variable on this rose. I hope it stays this gorgeous once I plant it in the ground. I say "it" but what I really mean is "them" because obviously I'll be getting more.

There are some roses that actually touch your heart. Like Souvenir de la Malmaison. What a wonderful way to begin the morning, Annalyssa.

RE: Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

Mauvegirl, my Capt. Dyel (pronounced "jell" I'm guessing) has always been fairly puny compared to the others who get the same care. But Kaye in Arkansas said hers performs the same as the others.

It's interesting that the sports have different fragrances. I can't smell Kp Viktoria much, but some other people can. Is this a "tea-rose fragrance"? Also, unlike the others, she is highly resistant to balling and petal blight.

Annalyssa, that is a superb picture of SdlM. I don't see how you can go wrong with having more than one bush, but do want to tell you about my experience. The first bush, which is doing very well, is planted where it has morning sun and late afternoon shade. The second bush has morning shade and late afternoon sun and for the most part is not doing well at all. There's no comparison in performance between the two even though I give the second rose lots of care to encourage it. It just doesn't like that location.

Mauvegirl, Michael is correct re. the pronunciation of Dyel ("jell"). When written correctly (which it never is in the U.S.), the official name of your new rose contains a comma -- 'Capitaine Dyel, de Graville'. As it was explained to me, the comma indicates that the "de" is to be translated as "from" rather than "of".

My two plants of CDdG are a bit larger than SdlM, but not as large as 'Souvenir de St Anne's'. If your rose came from RU, it originated from cuttings I supplied. My plants were grown from cuttings taken from a plant imported by Mike Lowe. I suspect that all specimens of CDdG now in the U.S. can be traced back directly to Mike's import.

RE: Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

I planted 2 Kronprinzessin Viktoria this year and had the same reaction, indeed true love. I had gotten some encouraging advice about her hardiness in my zone - of course we haven't made it through the first winter yet! I'd be eager to grow some more of "the family" if suitable for my climate. So it caught my attention that CDdG was imported by Mike Lowe, since he lived not far from me. How do you think any of the others would do in cold wet New Hampshire?

 o
RE: Souvenir de la Malmaison, this is true love

Mmm, I've been pronouncing it Dyel as "Dee-el".
Anyone else concur?

Is Graville a town in France or is it part of the entire surname?

French officer in a war right?

Why would the D be silent in French? Who knows? Perhaps for the same reason that K is sometimes silent in English. If you know a better reason, please let the rest of us know. But actually the D's not silent . . . it's pronounced as it generally is in French when a Y follows a D.

Listen to a native French speaker pronounce the name . . .

Ratdogheads -- If 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria' survives the winter in your garden, then yes, you must add other members of the SdlM clan.

There are many gardeners who will forever be grateful that Mike Lowe was the audacious, daring, committed and driven character that he was. Who but Mike Lowe would -- even momentarily -- have entertained the notion of attempting to do what he did with roses in NEW HAMPSHIRE?

In Thomas Christopher's "In Search of Lost Roses" there's a chapter on Mike and his NH garden. In the final paragraphs, Mike comments that, due to the severity of the previous winter, he had lost his entire crop of young Hybrid Perpetual plants. He goes on to say: "Want Bourbons? I got extras. Boy, have I got Bourbons this year." So, take heart from Mike's experience and try more Bourbons in your garden. You just never know . . .

There are two Bourbons in my garden that always evoke memories of Mike Lowe -- CDdG and 'Marquise de Balbiano'. Both are now in this country due to his efforts. He once remarked that 'Marquise de Balbiano' would be the finest of pillar roses if only it were hardy. I'm thankful that it IS hardy in my zone, and I have Mike to thank for the fact it's in my garden.

Windeaux, thank you for disseminating Capt. Dyel via Roses Unlimited. That's a good move.

Letter J in French represents a softer sound (zhe). The harder sound is represented by DI or sometimes DY. If you say dee-ell and run it together fast, you'll see that the spelling is sort of phonetic.
