| I went to Berkeley Horticulture today to look for fragrant roses for my coworker. Roses are 50% off there this weekend. I found a Pope John Paul II which is right up her alley and I managed to come home with Cornelia. Apparently, I'm a sucker for Pemberton hybrid musks. I already have Felicia, Francesca and have a desire for Penelope but no space. The reason I bought Cornelia is because I've heard she has nearly thornless flexible canes that are easy to work with. What would you do with Cornelia in an ideal situation? Inspirational photos are welome. |

| I'd plant her in front of a fence, since the canes for Pemberton H. Musk roses seem to like to grow horizontally. Then, I'd go out and buy Buff Beauty, which is one of my favorite roses, period. Zachary |

| I agree with Zachary -- but must add that a happy Cornelia has a lovely, gentle presence. Jeri |

I love my Buff Beauty and out front I have a new Cornelia which is still a baby but putting on some growth with all this heat we've had. I think my Melodee Parfumee will have to be moved next year to accomodate Cornelia. No fence here but I will enjoy her, I know. The hybrid musks just love our climate. Mary |

Jeri & Zachary, thank you for responses. I would like to let Cornelia grow as she prefers, so that she is happy and I can enjoy her. Zachary, I believe my taste in roses is similar to yours and I have been interested in Buff Beauty for a while. I'm trying to only buy roses that I have seen in person (and liked) so I'll try to find a Buff Beauty. I think should go to the Sacramento City Cemetery next month to see Cornelia and Buff Beauty. Mary, my roses put out new growth during the heatwave too! Of course, a "heatwave" here is a few days in the 80s. |

| Brenda, if you let her grow as she pleases, canes will loop over to the ground under the weight of bloom. A tripod or pillar would be good if you don't have a suitable fence, |

| Michael, I do have a masonry fence. I could use eye bolts and wire to make a suitable trellis for her. I'm planning some sort of support as I don't have the space to let her grow as a shrub. Luxrosa has also written about how to espalier Cornelia. Sacramento City Cemetery grows Cornelia on an arch which is one reason to go visit soon. |

| Cornelia smells wonderful! |
RE: Cornelia

I grow Cornelia on a post and wire support, against a neighbouring derelict building. She flowers all summer, but can get a touch of powdery mildew. Here you can see her at the back of the border, in her first year.
...and here she is earlier this year. You can see I have not trained her very well. Daisy

I love Cornelia, especially the wonderful fragrance. My Cornelia has a fantastic spring flush, a few scattered blooms throughout the summer, then finishes with a nice fall flush. This rose is growing with no support and forms a very large, mounding shrub. The only complaint I have is that it is prone to cane dieback (primarily at the tips) and I have been tempted to buy another Cornelia to see if another bush may have more vigor. Molly |

| Those pics are lovely-I really like the Pemberton Musks. I'd love to grow Prosperity, Francesca and even Nur Mahal... Actualy, I'd love to grow everything. I'm insatiably curious. As Dorothy Parker said: "Curiosity is the cure for boredom, there is no cure for curiosity" |

| I find that 'Cornelia' is one of those roses that flower far better on downward-hanging canes than on upright canes. So it is important to let it cascade over something for maximum flower production. |

| Looking at the pictures, the flowers on daisy's Cornelia seem to be more full while Jardinerstx's show anthers. Is this due to a difference in clones, fertility, temperature at bloom time, culture or other? Cath |
RE: Cornelia

Cath My Cornelia does show anthers, very prettily. It is just, not a very good photo. Daisy |

| Aha! And thank you, Daisy. Cath |

Thank you Daisy and Cath for the pictures and Dr. Manners for the input. Zachary, thank you for the Dorothy Parker quote, which I never would have guessed would come up in this thread but is much appreciated. Dorothy Parker was probably more curious about whiskey sours than roses, don't ya think? |

| Speaking of..“I wish I could drink like a lady, I can take one or two at the most, Three and I'm under the table, Four and I'm under the host” |

| Actually, I think Dorothy Parker is a perfect reference while extolling the virtues of flapper-era roses!! Although Rev. Pemberton might not agree... |
