Xiang Fen Lian?

Hey there!

I just noticed that Burling carries this rose. There's only photo on HMF, but it is beautiful! Does anyone grow this rose? I'd love to find out more about it.

I don't -- but my initial interest was somewhat squished by the note: "Tends to ball in wet weather."

I have the same problem with Ping Dong Yue Ji (see below) -- which apparently may be identified as 'Cels Multiflora.'

Jay, how strong and prevalent is your marine influence? Notice the page warns the blooms tend to ball in wet weather. When I worked in The Palisades, the fog was ever-present and anything susceptible to balling was guaranteed to. It seems to be a beautiful, interesting and well scented rose, but might be of little value to you if you seldom see a decent flower. Good luck! Kim

Welcome home, Jeri! You're back out of the "dead zone" for communications. Interesting, two great minds traveling down the same gutter. We posted very similar posts simultaneously. I hope you had a great time! Ping Dong seldom has balling issues for me here in Encino, but Sai Zhao Jun seems to be much more prone to it here. Kim

I wish Ping Dong did NOT mildew for us, because when the blooms open cleanly, they're gorgeous. But it does. :-(

Yes, we are out of the communications Dead Zone, and back to reality. We had no Internet at the beach -- but then, who needs it, in the face of such beauty. :-)

There can be fairly humid days, but there isn't a lot of fog. Being near the coast, the relative humidity is higher than say where you are Kim, but I haven't noticed balling to be a big problem. I definitely don't notice double or very double flowers struggling where singles and semi doubles have no problem.

I think it's one I'll keep an eye on.

Jay, there's not much fog here anymore, either -- but it's not just fog. Petal texture is some of it.

In any case, fog or no fog, some roses ball here, and some roses mildew here. If they don't out grow those problems, at least for the most part, they don't stay here.
