| Just an update on this rose. It is the rose Jeri has labeled "Thing of Many Names" because it has been found all over CA, and so has 7 or 8 or 9 study names, I forget exactly how many. Anyway, I am just reporting that mine DOES re-bloom (I rooted it from an old bush growing in full shade which only blooms in the Spring, so I wasn't sure). Mine bloomed in the Spring (April/May), again in mid-Summer (July), and is now blooming, with a lot of new buds coming. In the picture the bush looks a bit scraggly, but that is because it has been pruned constantly by the doe and her fawn who have taken up residence in our neighborhood, so I can't blame the rose. It gets a little BS in the Spring, but is very clean now, as you can see, and has been like that for a while. Just to let you know - this is evidently a good rose for where I live in San Rafael, CA (No SF Bay). Jackie |
Follow-Up Postings:
| If it is the ubiquitously-found rose I think it is, it should be great in most NoCal locations. Jeri |
| I am quite certain such a 'thing' popped into many of our heads.....but whether it was a rose is debateable (in my case, it was Yoshi, our lurcher....who answered to many names including gobsh*te, bast**d and snivelling thief). Forgive my facetiousness, Jacqueline, and hoping your rose is stunning, healthy and generous. |
| OK, I'm curious. Are pictures/descriptions of this rose available? |

| Sorry - I thought I had posted a picture - here is one I took yesterday. I forgot to say above that I don't spray it (except occasionally with that rotten egg deer away stuff). Jackie |

| Brent -- This appears to be the same rose, probably a Hybrid Perpetual, which has been collected in many places as: McBride Plot, McCarty Plot, William Daniels, Gilbert Plot, Bud Jones, Jeri's Mystery (Mare Island), Sam Hill -- and I think there are probably more. You can find at least some of those identities at HelpMeFind Roses. In my SoCal garden, I had it get up to maybe 6 ft., but here, not sprayed, it was plagued by rust, and occasional mildew. But when it is good, it is very very good -- mostly in Northern Ca. To date, the only suggested ID was 'Geant des Batailles.' Looking at images of that, and knowing this rose as I do, I don't feel positive about that ID. FWIW, there are multiple plants of it in the Sacramento City Cemetery -- under various names. Below, see it as it lookedfor me -- at a time when it looked its best. Jeri "Gilbert Plot": |
| I should add that it is quite variable as to color -- sometimes darker, sometimes lighter, and even petal count varies. But when you propagate it, and plant it with the others, they are all the same. Jeri |

| The old bush I got mine from is in a garden nearby. The lady who has lived there for 40 years told me that that bush was already there when she moved in. Here is a pic showing older buds - they look as if they might ball, but they do not. |
| No. They didn't ball here, either. Had this rose been as clean in my garden as it is in yours -- or in the Sacramento City Cemetery -- or any of the several cemeteries where I've seen it, I'd still be growing it. I think it's a lovely thing. OH! Another Study Name is "Requa Homesite." Jeri |
| Jacqueline your rose looks exactly like one I have. I got mine from HoovB and at the time we thought it was Reine Victoria, but there was thought that it might be La Reine. I don't remember what the outcome was. Ask her to look at your photo and see if it's the same as hers. |
| Yes, that looks like the one I have, though mine was not from a cutting or found rose or anything like that, it was from the Armstrong Garden's "Pre Order" catalog that they put out in October and it was supposed to be 'Reine Victoria', though at one point I thought it looked more like 'La Reine'. I pulled it out several years ago but it comes back from the roots without fail, roots which seem to go down yards or meters, not feet. Far more persistent than Doc Huey. Surely pink HPs bear a lot of resemblance to one another? |
| You know, I'd like to see Jackie's rose opened. It actually COULD be 'La Reine.' Jeri |
| Is that what I sent you, jackie_o? If it is, I'm glad I sent it. It looks great! Mine always wanted to be 10 feet tall. |
| Gail the small bush shot was from the first year after you sent it to me. I keep it severely pruned. :) In the first photo you can see the mother plant on the left. The small bush right next to the gravel path is a cutting. |
| Oh yes Jackie! I think what you may have is 'La Reine.' How nice! Jeri |
| Me, Jackie, or the original Jackie? ;) :) |
| Oh, probably the "original" Jackie. :-) Jeri |
| Just wondered if the original poster saw this and if she thought this was her rose. |

| I just noticed these recent additions to this thread. I looked up La Reine on HMF, and looked at all of the lovely pictures posted above. Of course Jackie_o is correct when she says "color and fullness vary"! Mine consistently has less petals than many of the pictures of La Reine, but there are some that look like about the same number. The shape of the leaves looks right. Most of the pictures of La Reine show a color way more towards purple than mine is, but I understand that can vary too. The fullness and color of mine does not vary so far at all - it is always the same, but that could just be the soil and the climate. The one down the street that I rooted mine from looks just like mine. Jeri - here is a pic of it open - I will go out later today and see if I can take some more pics of it. Jackie |
| Well, I still think it looks more like TTOMN -- but you know what, could you take a leaf from this, and one from LaReine, and put them side-by-side, and photograph them? What I'd like to see are front/back/stipule -- rather like these of "Grandmother's Hat" leaves. (No, I don't expect you to make a collage, but I'd like to see if your leaves are alike, or different.) The bloom isn't the best identifier -- but leaves from plants grown in almost the same environment -- are far more helpful. :-) Jeri |
| As someone who could never grow this rose well, I'm swooning over jackie_o's picture of La Reine(?) in front of the metal fence. To me that is what an old rose should look like, sumptuous, romantic, no doubt fragrant, stuffed with petals, absolutely beautiful. I don't usually like to pair pink and yellow roses, but jackie_o, it looks beautiful in your garden, perhaps because it's not a bright, modern yellow and the habit and bloom configuration of the two is similar. More pictures of your garden would be very welcome. I love seeing roses that people in cooler zones grow. Ingrid |

| Jeri - unfortunately I do not grow La Reine, so I can't do a comparison of the leaves for you, but I did just go out and look at what I still think of as TTOMN. No blooms at the moment; just blown flowers and new buds coming. However, here is a pic I just took of my rose showing 7 leaflets (most of the leaves have only 5). Does La Reine have 7 leaflets sometimes? I am now going back out to pick some of the leaves, so I can show you the back & the front of them. Jackie |
| UGH. I don't think those look like L.R. -- but I can go out and check when the sprinkler's stop running. :-) Jeri |

| Here is a pic I just took of the back & front of leaves from my TTOMN - what do you think? Jackie_o - any thoughts? Jackie |
| Jackie, I'll have to go downstairs and take some leaves, but it may have to wait -- I'm having a massive asthma attack, and the East wind is blowing. :-( Jeri |

| Jeri - there is no rush! For heaven's sake keep out of the wind. I would recommend a nice long bath with a book and a hot toddy! Jackie |
| More drugs. And some whine. :-) Jeri (Meanwhile, if anyone else is growing 'La Reine' . . . ) |

| Hope you feel better fast Jeri. (no wind up here thankfully) My GH leaves do not look like your photo, they are a solid green. Are those new leaves or older ones? Mine are the color of Jackies. |

| Jackie_o, or anyone who grows La Reine, could you please post a picture of a hip or hips on here? Sometimes that is a good way to at least eliminate possibilities, as hips can be so different. Jackie |
| Jackie -- Those are new leaves on Grandmother's Hat. The color settles to plain green, as they mature. Jeri |
