I guess I'm feeling nostalgic lately. In addition to feeling blue about not being able to grow Rose de Rescht, my very first ever OGR, I'm missing the nursery I bought it from: uncommonrose.com I used to love shopping their site and buying from them. I'll confess that I just visited the wayback machine and browsed what they had in stock in March of 2005. Was it really more than 10 years ago that I bought my first OGR from them? Anyone else miss them?

Miss them desperately If you care about preserving diversity, you must.

I bought my first OGRs from Roses of Yesterday and Today. My dad and I sent in a joint order. We were so excited. I was still in my late teens -- early adopter that I was. I am still nostalgic about that adventure. I miss that sense of excitement, and I miss my dad. Rosefolly

I'm lucky not to miss any Swedish rose nurseries yet. There are rather more of them now than when I first started buying roses 25 years ago, especially since I discovered mail order businesses. But I desperately miss privately owned local nurseries, for roses and other plants. All but two have been bought up by large garden center chains with the same stock of foreign grown plants. The staff know absolutely nothing and don't even realize it. One of the pleasures of shopping at a small independent nursery was and is to talk to the staff about our mutual interest in plants and gardening. I remember several talks with great pleasure and it certainly paid for the nursery. I once bought four plants of Agnes although I had come with no intention of buying any. I bought a large and well grown specimen of a white bleeding heart in spring and wanted to buy another but the employee said that was unnecessary as I could easily divide the big plant. I was so impressed that I insisted on buying both so now I have three plants, making a nice group. That would never happen with the cashiers at the new plant supermarkets.

I bought my first Mme. Alfred Carriere from The Uncommon Rose. But, the rose that most remembers them to me was supposed to have been an Old Blush. What they sent instead was a climbing china (not Cl. Old Blush) now 15' up a pepper tree and nearly as wide that has 1.5" blooms on it at least 11 months of the year. Though it still has no name (despite using the wayback machine site to look for candidates), I love it! Yes, sadly missed. In memory of The Uncommon Rose:

I'd forgotten about this company but now it's all coming back and I know I did order from them, and eagerly read what they had on offer every year. I seem to remember I bought Basye's Purple from them and a beautiful plant with flowers on it arrived. It took one look around and slowly began to commit suicide. My first old garden roses also came from Roses of Yesterday and Today. I was excited beyond words at that time to discover old roses. I felt as though my life had been enriched with something rare and wonderful. Ingrid
