| Went to the Autumn in the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden event today and purchased Dr. Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie. SJHRG lists it as a Hybrid China but the Sacramento Cemetery lists it as a Hybrid Bourbon. I remember admiring it at the cemetery but can't remember how large it grows. Would appreciate any information. Thanks, |

| Hi, Diane - you and Miles were driving out as Kathryn and I drove in yesterday. We missed you by a couple of minutes thanks to a traffic jam. I'm not sure how to distinguish between a Hyb Bourbon and Hyb China. It has the smooth canes, heavy disease-resistant foliage, arching canes and many-petalled fragrant bloom of either type of rose. It's got prickles on the back of the leaves so be careful - you can still be injured with this rose, I say from personal experience. It's medium pink, and grows in a suckering way about six feet tall. We have it in two places - one is up in the Broadway Bed, and then down by A.P. Smith's plot in the East Bed, where it's been tied to a rebar arch but does not really climb over it. It's lovely when it blooms in the spring. |
