| Hello, all! I'm in San Antonio, and am looking for a rose that won't get bigger than 4x4, either an OGR or an Austin, that is either creamy white, creamy yellow or creamy apricot. It's got to look good next to Hot Cocoa. Thought I'd turn to the experts for ideas! Have been looking at Mlle. Franziska Kruger and her sport, Blumenschmidt, as well as Austin's Perdita, Windermere and Lichfield Angel. Will be grateful for any input you might offer. Thanks! |

| Souvenir de la Malmaison, or perhaps Souvenir d'Elise Vardon. I'd also suggest for English rose you take a look at Ambridge Rose. It isn't as striking of an apricot as Austin's website makes it look. |

You might consider Evelyn or Tamora as creamy apricots; Golden Celebration would likely get too big, but the color is beautiful as a creamy, golden yellow. Here's a pic of Evelyn. Diane |

Run, don't walk, to the ARE website. The roses they grow are all suitable for your climate. They will tell you the size etc. ARE is, in my opinion, one of the few retailers who don't hype roses...if they say it is healthy, it's healthy. If they say it is fragrant, it's fragrant. If they say they keep it at 4 ft, I can keep it at 4 ft. I just purchased Englemann's Quest and I love it! Creamy yellow with a bit of soft apricot... |

ARE is in San Antonio, correct? I think Perle d'Or would be pretty too. It's creamy apricot but paler in the summer when Hot Cocoa is paler and more intense in the fall when HC is more intense. It is always in bloom here. I'm picking contrasting roses but you may prefer something with a similar bloom. Susan |

| For what it's worth, Evelyn has reached my roof this year, so she gets much taller than 4 feet here, but don't know about your climate. She's a great rose though. |

| Thanks for the responses, y'all! :-) I will definitely give ARE a call. They have closed their San Antonio location, but are still in Brenham, maybe 3 hours away from here. I like that Perle d'Or! The others are great roses, too. I do grow the Ambridge Rose and love it. Guess it would have been clearer for me to describe the color I'm looking for as ivory or white blushed with yellow or white blushed with apricot. Perle d'Or is an Earthkind rose, too, which is another plus. Am definitely trying to avoid anything that is a blackspot magnet. Yeah, I know, I'm not asking for too much. lol Thanks again. |

| I would avoid Mme. Franziska Kruger like the plague, since you'll never find a more temperamental tea. Blumenschmidt just isn't that great. I've had both, and others here have seconded my opinions. Lady Hillingdon might work for you, and if you don't mind a modern rose, Bolero is considered to be a very good and pretty rose. If you don't mind smaller blooms Marie Pavie is a great rose, and White Pet is super tough and healthy, and seems to bloom all the time. Perle d'Or will probably get huge. Ingrid |

| How bright is the sunlight where you are. White blushed with yellow can become ugly tan when bleached out. You might want to consider some yellow floribundas. I am partial to Sunflare, but there a number of nice ones among newer introductions. Perhaps Julia Child? Moonsprite, from the 50s, might work for you if it is still in commerce. |

| 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria' is precisely creamy white and 4 x 4, and it is a great rose, well adapted to Texas. A no-brainer. |

| Michael is right. KPV has done very well for me and is not a large rose. A persistent bloomer in all but the hottest conditions and a tough rose except in cool and foggy coastal areas. Ingrid |

| Thanks for the additional responses! I just contacted ARE, and they seconded the recommendation of KPV, as well as recommending that I look at Marie Pavie' and Ducher. Any thoughts on which one to choose from among those three? Is KPV as fragrant as I hear SDLM is? Fragrance would certainly be a plus..... Thanks again |

| OK, just one more to consider.... Perle des Jardins? How "yellow" is it? The photos I'm seeing make it look more whitish than yellowish, and I'm thinking it would look really nice next to Hot Cocoa.... ??? |

| Ducher is a fantastic rose here in Texas and the fragrance is great as well. Honestly, any of those roses would be good for you. I will say that Ducher often comes out as white due to our heat. The 'blush' in most roses will not be noticeable during the warmer parts of the year. In Fall though you will be able to see it. Josh |

Ducher and Marie Pavie are really really white here, for the most part of the year. I have a Perle des Jardins...at 2 years old she has yet to bloom! I keep my Perle d'Or pruned to 4 ft, no problem. I would think anything ARE suggested would be great! Let us know what you decide! Susan |

This may not be your cup of tea, but I grow my Hot Cocoa and Cinco de Mayo, which are both of similar color, with the tan/mauve/purple roses. I like this combination a lot. I have put Distant Drums and Koko Loco next to these two - plan to put more mauves and will try Twilight Zone amongst them. Have Golden Border nearby - it has loads of creamy yellow blooms that look good with Hot Cocoa and Cinco de Mayo. Judith |

I have Perdita in full sun and I cannot fault it. It flowers throughout the spring, summer and autumn. It is looking particularly good at the moment. It has a sweet scent, which is stronger in the warmth. Mine is about 3-4 feet high, but only about 2-3 feet across. Daisy

| KpV is fragrant to some noses, but I can't smell it. I can smell SdlM and the other sports. |

| Since I have a cold, I can't detect much scent in SdlM or KPV, although KVP does have some scent for me at other times. Strangely enough, I can smell La France nearby just as well with a cold as without, and I much prefer its scent to that of SdlM. I wouldn't recommend Perle de Jardins. It was a miserable rose for me as it has been for Melissa from Italy. Looking at Daisy's beautiful picture of Perdita, I'd be tempted to choose it instead. Ingrid |

| Thanks again, everyone. After taking all your input into consideration, I think I will go with KPV. And I may just have to find a nice container and a spot on the patio for Perdita, too..... :-) This is the final selection for a big planting for two beds in front of an entryway. A type of hedge of Felicia across the back. Then, moving out from either side of the walkway, a cluster each of Hot Cocoa, White Licorice, and Munstead Wood. KPV will be in front, on either side of the walk, in front of Hot Cocoa. Gruss an Aachen will be on either side, on outside front corner, in front of MW. Thanks to all! |
