Very lovely indeed! How is the fragrance?

Thanks for sharing this,
Virginia

RE: Francis Dubreuil

That is, of course, 'Barcelona.' But a very nice example of 'Barcelona.'

Jeri

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

Yes it is Barcelona, but sold here as FD.
the fragrance is like turkish delight, strong sweet rosewater.

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

Yes. Pretty much sold everywhere as F.D.

It's interesting to hear you say that 'FD' in commerce in Oz is 'Barcelona'. My understanding is that some of the rose folks Down Under do not think 'FD' in commerce is 'Barcelona' (or 'Francis Dubreuil', either).

To me, it looks like 'Barcelona', but I've never grown it- just seen many photos of it! Of course, there's no reason why you can't have more than one 'FD' imposter...

RE: Francis Dubreuil

As Kim will tell you, he has had the opportunity to see "Francis Dubreui" and 'Barcelona' grown in the same garden at the same time.

(All of which, of course, does not necessarily mean that there are not SOME genuine FD's in Oz..)

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Jeri, I think that the real 'FD' still exists somewhere, and maybe that somewhere is 'Oz'.

What I meant is that I have the impression that the Tea Bag ladies (and others?) think their 'FD' in commerce isn't the real 'FD' OR 'Barcelona', but is some third party instead.

In the U.S. and in Europe, FD in commerce is Barcelona. But is it some other rose with glossy leaves in Oz?

I couldn't say, but would be glad to head over there to investigate, if only I had some funding from the 'Society of Francis Dubreuil Research' or some similar organization... It would be a sacrifice, but it's all in the name of science.

Virginia, maybe I should do the photographic documentation, Kim and Jeri can do the educated comparitive analysis.....Just to find that foundation

RE: Francis Dubreuil

At least you will know your Schmidt's is the "real deal". Jackie sent me the cuttings, I rooted them, then passed the more mature, own root plant to you. I have several budded to Pink Clouds and Fortuniana to see how they perform. Kim

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Well, should I ever win the Lottery, I will fund the foundation.

But don't get excited.
I have never yet bought a lottery ticket!

Jeri

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Jeri, don't use my numbers, they always loose (combined annual amount spent on lotto tickets is less than a buck)

Kim, I am looking forward to seeing the two yellow and Leonie all beside each other and seeing it what was lost is found.

Thank you Jackie!

Whatever it is, it looks awesome Adam :) I rather fancy a rose that smells like Turkish Delight!

A fragrance like Turkish Delight...That's a marvelous thing to say...and possibly, just the thing to tip me over the edge into enablement. I've had FD/Barcelona on my list for ages.

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

I have no idea what Turkish Delight smells like -- but it certainly SOUNDS great.

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

Jeri, I have no idea either, but who cares? It must be delight-ful!

And it's pretty easy on the eyes, as well. A nice combination, methinks.

Everyone who has 'met' Francis has had to have one. And he does very nicely in a large pot. Just needs protection from the hot afternoon sun in hot climates like mine.

That unopened bud looks larger and more pointed than those on 'Barcelona' in pics I've seen. Considering what Kim Rupert has said about how 'Barcelona' performs when budded, I'm wondering if the rose in the pic was grown that way. Or, perhaps, it's just another fragrant dark-red HT being sold as 'Francis Dubreuil' in Australia.

:-)

RE: Francis Dubreuil

I don't think Australia has the own root market the US suffers, Christopher. It could well be budded and it also could have enjoyed more water, fertilizer and a more benign climate than many of ours have. Kim

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

From my understanding of what I have read, if the rose has a notable fragrance it is Barcelona, since the real FD is said to have no fragrance... Is this correct? I have a new "Francis D" that I recently received from ARE, it has it's very first bud right now which I am excitedly waiting to open. If what I have heard is true I would rather have Barcelona anyway just for the lovely fragrance.

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

That would be the case here, in the US. But it's possible that a different rose is sold under the name 'Francis Dubreuil' in Australia.

:-)

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Ahhh, that makes sense, I didn't think of that!

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Smaller blooms on the bush.

RE: Francis Dubreuil

Kippy, I missed your post before, but I'm pretty sure this Foundation will have grant money for photographic documentation, so all we need to do is locate that Foundation... Easy, peasy.

Virginia

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

Doesn't look much like the one we grow in England under this name ...

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

another pic. of same..

 o
RE: Francis Dubreuil

Oh yes. This is a rose greatly affected by climate. Marlorena, your 1st. photo is definitely the rose I grew as "Francis Dubreuil."

But Adam's photo, which began this thread, is what it looked like in a heatwave here, affected by dry wind and high temps.
