In October 2007, I invited rose friends and GW members to what I referred to as the 1st Annual GW Potluck and Rose Swap. We had so much fun! We swapped plants, learned how to propagate roses during a demonstration by our own jimeastcoast, ate ourselves silly, laughed way too much, and we all came away having made real-life friends out of folks who were formerly Internet friends. The gathering continued for the next two or three years, with more people and more fun each year. As life here got a bit more hectic, with the demands of my nursery and my deteriorating garden, I stopped hosting this party. I was talking to my husband the other day, and he suggested that it's time to bring it back. (catsrose also mentioned it when I saw her this spring during the Hollywood Cemetery work day.) On Saturday, October 19, GW friends and local rose people are cordially invited to spend the afternoon in Hartwood! Time and other details are to be determined (I'm thinking 1-4, or noon - 3, or something like that), but I wanted to get this out as soon as we decided to go forward with it, so everyone who is interested and available can mark their calendars and plan to be here. Please RSVP, either here or to my email (connie@hartwoodroses.com) if you'd like to come. I'm really excited about this. My gardens aren't nearly as nasty and neglected looking right now, and the roses are eager to see you. Connie
Follow-Up Postings:

Well, Connie, I will send my spirit self across the Atlantic - expect psychic waves of Englishness (usually drinking, swearing, falling over, so it is probs just as well a large ocean separates us). As usual, whenever some rosy jolly is described, (often in sunny places, to make it all so much worse for us poor sun-starved Brits). I am weak with envy.....post a lot of pics - you have been inspirational to me and a little bit of Virginia has been mentally transposed to Fenland. Cheers, Suzy.

Sounds wonderful! I have always wanted to see your garden. If I lived within a day's driving distance, I would definitely be there. As it is, I have already traveled too much this year. I will have to settle for seeing you in Lakeland in November. Have a wonderful time! Rosefolly

Connie, count me in for next year. Lakeland has blown my budget for 2013. But I would LOVE to see your place and your roses! Susan

In order to attend your party I would need Scottie from Star Trek to beam me aboard. Wish I could be there. Have a wonderful day. Diane

Spirit guests are always welcome! They can party with the spirits that already live here year-round. I understand that the west coasters can't make it. Wish teleporters were reality ... wouldn't that be fun! Can't wait to meet you in person, Susan. We already have a couple of confirmed guests, via the Hartwood Roses FB page. Whether this turns out to be a small, intimate gathering of friends, or a raucous good ole time, I'm very excited to be reviving the tradition. I love a good party!

Count me in. Also, anyone coming from TN or N/SC who wants to break the trip up, I can put up guests.

Connie, I would jump at the chance to see your magical garden and meet you and the other wonderful members of this forum. I'm sure it will be a glorious experience. I'll be there in spirit but my physical self will demand lots of pictures here afterwards. Ingrid

Nobody likes a rose party more than I do, but it's got to be in spirit only. Dang. Anita

I'm not sure how magical my garden is, but I like how it's coming along ... after teetering on the brink of ruin for way too long. catsrose, darling, I am thrilled that you are coming! It's always a pleasure. Ingrid, you can be assured that smiling faces will appear here after the fact. Anita, one day you will be here. I'm starting the reclamation of my David Austin garden today. making progress!

Next year we just need to make a group of west coasters to travel out together. Seeing all my CA friends at Gettysburg for the 150th this year was the best and the rose party sounds like so much fun. I'd love to see your beautiful roses one day and go see the Hollywood roses in Richmond as well.

Wish I had the vacation time and the budget left to cover a trip to Virginia! *sigh* There's not much better than getting together with other rose lovers. I know you'll post pics, Connie. Like many others I will look forward to them and hope we can meet in person some other year. Anne

Between this post and a notice on FB, it looks like we will have a small but enthusiastic group of party-goers. Time has been set, 2:00 - 5:00, Saturday, October 19. If you are local and you need some encouragement, I guarantee there will be roses to see while you are here, and food, and friends, and lots and lots of FUN. (photo taken in my garden two days ago. More photos in this morning's blog post, link below.)
