A non-rosarian friend in the Austin, TX, area has a 'Mr. Bluebird,' which we gave her about a year ago. It's in memory of a greatly beloved, blue-eyed Dalmatian, who had passed. Now, she has been growing it in a pot, and it NEEDS to be in the ground. Remembering that 'Mr. Bluebird' is bred from 'Old Blush,' and 'Old Blush,' (self-pollinated seedling) is it feasible to plant it out NOW, or must she wait for spring? Jeri

Mrs. Jennings, How large is the plant? If it is as least 1 gallon it is completely feasible to plant it right now. Texas winters are extremely mild, and as Austin is further South that me I would confidently advise that the rose (reported as hardy to 4b) would be just fine. I like to say that we have two growing seasons in Texas: spring and fall. Josh

I'm glad to hear that Josh, since I am hoping to plant some roses within the next few weeks.

Meslgh, What roses are you planting? By the way, you should come out to the Farmers' Branch Celebration of Roses on Saturday! Ogrose and I will both be there, perhaps some other Gardenweb members as well. Josh

Oh, yes--in fact Oct. is the PERFECT month. Most shrubs & perennials do far better planted in fall than spring. They have more time to develop root mass that helps them survive summer heat (which can start in late April or May). This time of the year generally is blessed with lots of sunshine but the nights are cool. It's also, ironically, one of the most reliable times for us to get rains (just got some). Almost all wildflowers, trees & shrubs are recommended for fall planting in central TX. Have her dig a good hole, amend for the alkaline soil & water & mulch well.
