Marie van Houtte - Do I have another mislabeled rose?

| I got this rose as a one gallon late in the summer last year. She grew more than bloomed at first, so I really didn't get a good idea of what the blooms were going to look like. After the polar vortex winter we had, MvH spent time recovering rather than blooming until it really started heating up this summer. Her blooms have been big and beautiful, but never start out with the pale yellow/white centers that I hoped for and seen in pictures. I assumed that was due to the heat , and she would start showing more yellow in the cooler fall. That hasn't been the case. She often starts out a very pale pink with dark pink edging and a touch of yellow at the base, but for all intents and purposes, she is a pink rose...a lovely pink rose. She holds her blooms up at least as often as they nod, and she often has a knotted center that never fully "unknots"...I don't see that in most pictures of MvH, either. I added Maman Cochet this summer, and she looks suspiciously like my Marie van Houtte. There are subtle differences in bloom size and color, but that may be due to Maman Cochet being younger...the leaves, new growth, prickles and bloom form look pretty much identical. I can't detect much fragrance from either rose. I know MvH is a parent of Maman Cochet, but I wasn't expecting them to look so similar. Do you think I have the real Marie van Houtte, or another Maman Cochet or do you have another guess as to what my Marie van Houtte may be?

| It's a beautiful rose, but definitely not Marie van Houtte. I haven't grown Maman Cochet and can't be certain, but to me your rose doesn't fit the pictures I've seen of Maman. One thing I do know is that you have a very handsome dog! Ingrid |

| Thanks Ingrid! I’ve been pretty sure it wasn’t MvH, but wanted to wait out its fall blooms to see if I might be wrong. If you don’t think it looks like Maman Cochet, then I might have two mislabeled roses…my MvH & MC (each from a different source) look very much alike. They are beautiful roses, but I had planned for a rose with some yellow tones where MvH is planted...best laid plans, right As for Bowser, we found him in our pasture back in July of 2011. He was down to only skin & bones and completely covered with massive sized ticks. He may have been abandoned, but he could have been displaced from the tornadoes that left so much damage surrounding us late April of that year. We were unable to find his true owners, so he’s still living with us. He’s put on around 30 lbs since we found him and is probably the best dog ever…but don’t tell my other pups I said that :) |

| Here are a couple of pictures of my Maman Cochet blooms for comparison...

| pat, your Bowser is one lucky dog, and how nice of you to take him in and give him a chance at a much better life. Since you have what you believe is Maman Cochet, you're best able to compare the two and tell whether they're similar. I always thought MC was a very floppy rose with weak necks that made the flowers hang downward quite a bit. Hopefully someone who has this rose will be able to give you a more definitive answer. | Thanks again Ingrid! Blooms on my "MvH" will sometimes nod...more frequently on my Maman Cochet, but she is younger, and even so, often holds hers upright, as well. I'm no expert, but they really appear to me to be the same rose. I looked more at the Maman Cochet pictures on HMF and some are the spitting image of mine. I do think I have two Maman Cochet roses. I will probably gift one of them and try again in the spring for the real MvH or maybe Mrs Dudley Cross instead. |

| Those pictures made me think of Madame Berkeley... |

| Pat, when I looked at HMF after saying I didn't think it was Maman Cochet, I agree that your rose looks exactly like the Maman Cochet on HMF. Sorry about misleading you. Mrs. Dudley Cross is a very beautiful rose also, although it did mildew in my garden, but you're in a very different zone and I have no idea how it would do for you in that respect. Ingrid |

| My first thought was Maman Cochet. Her color is slightly different in my garden, but it is probably due to different climate. |

| Thanks for everyone's help in figuring this out. zjw727, I looked at Madame Berkeley on HMF and what a beautiful rose! The description of violet highlights definitely fits mine, but a lot of the pictures posted show a yellow/apricot center that mine hasn't shown. The more I look at Maman Cochet pictures, the more I'm convinced that I have two of them. |

| It looks like Maman Cochet to me. |

| I was looking at my MvH's today. I have 3 or 4 of them. To me they seem to be almost white or cream with pink. They are very pretty, but not what I see in your pictures. Could you have Madame Antoine Mari? It is an earth kind, and very pretty like yours. Sammy |
