'R. Dr. Merkeley' - This rose has caught my eye and the providence intrigues me. Can any of you wise rosarians shed any light on this rose? Would also love to hear from someone growing it.

TIA

I only know it seems to be highly thought of in Canada. The good folks at Corn Hill Nursery might be able to tell you more.

Dr. Merkeley is highly thought of in Sweden as well, by those few who grow it. It is no spinosissima as it says on HMF, it's probably a cross between a centifolia and R. majalis.

According to my friend Helena who contributed photos of Dr. Merkeley on HMF the story is that Dr. H. J. Merkeley, a dentist in Winnipeg in the 1920'ies, had received the rose in lieu of payment from one of his poorer patients whose wife was originally from Russia and had brought the rose from there. Dr. Merkeley gave cuttings to Frank Skinner.

Nastarana, Thanks, I will contact them especially since I want to order it from them.

mariannese, I appreciate the extra's on the providence. While a beautiful, hardy rose I love the mystery regarding the history.

Have a great day all
