| The summer heat fades. Fall brings cool temperatures -- even if there's no rain -- and Tea Roses begin again to crank out blooms. 'Mme. Lombard' -- A plant nearing some maturity. This is one of the most-commonly-found Teas in California. So variable, it is collected over and over . . . Jeri |
Follow-Up Postings:

| Beautiful! |
|
| Lovely! Jeri, what is the scent like? I don't think I've seen ML in person. |
|
| I'm the wrong person to ask about fragrance. The Tea fragrance almost always eludes me. What I love about her is her generosity of bloom through most of the year, and her beautiful changes of form and color. Well, THAT, and her general toughness. She's probably THE most commonly-found old rose in California, triumphing through every form of neglect. Jeri |

| How big has she gotten in your garden? |
|
| At present, she's almost to 4 ft. -- maybe 4 x 4. But she's only beginning to hit maturity, so I know she'll get somewhat taller and denser. When you come through the front gate, you pass between her on the right, and Lady Ann Kidwell on your left -- so lots of flower-power, there. She shares a bed with "Jesse Hildreth," who is only beginning to get past the sprawly stage, and stick a few canes upward. But he blooms like a house afire, too. So that area's going to be pretty nice in another couple of years. Jeri |

| Just lovely. I'm going to have to find more room. Maybe my neighbour wouldn't mind if I borrowed a bit of her land! |
|
| Oh, and zjw Misty Downs lists it as having a 'light fragrance'. |

| We're starting to revive, too. But it makes me rather nervous to see the warm climate roses putting out new growth now, when it's highly unlikely that they'll be able to ripen it. Still, the garden certainly is prettier now than it was in August. I was out yesterday getting a look at deaths and survivals. 'Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux' is gone, roots just rotted away, presumably it fell a victim to the sopping winter and spring we had. And 'Frau Dr. Schricker' has died. It was always puny. But the Salvia griegii and S. 'Hot Lips', which is similar, can take anything. I'm also developing a very high opinion of phlomis. As long as it's in sun, and not in a swamp, it seems to be able to take the heaviest soil, but also grow in thin soil over rocks, thriving all the time. I have a gardening friend who's mad for phlomis. He collects them and then shares cuttings of his plants with me. I don't know the names of the various species he's passed on to me, but they're populating more of the garden all the time. |

| She's quite beautiful. I had to add it to my list for a possible addittion next year. I wonder how it is on the East coast. I just checked and Roses Unlimited does have it on thier list so it must grow here. I love how the outer edges are darker, a true beauty. |

| The petals look like antique silk ribbons. Exquisite rose. What a joy to get blossoms like that every Fall. |
|
| Jeri, Thanks for sharing a great pic of the Madame. That motivates me for my planting job ahead. I just received bands of Mme. Lombard, Madame A. Mari, Mrs. B.R. Cant, G. Nabonnand and Le Vesuve for a hill in front of our house. Now ALL I have to do is build 5 planters to level out the slope. I figure I have a year to finish before they are big enough to plant with confidence. My wife says I'm crazy. I say I'm just in love with roses like I am with her! Lee |
|
| Jeri, Also, thank you to both you, Catspa and Ingrid for helping me choose which teas I might have success with in my garden. |

| I just got mine in a one gallon a few months ago and potted up to a five gallon. She's had flush after flush, and the blooms are on the small side. Maybe that will change with age. The scent is very light for me, and the bush itself is healthy and beautiful. She's one of those teas that just takes right off growing, unlike some I have. I absolutely love her. |

| Florida. The blooms DO get larger. I was noticing this morning that the blooms opening now are easily 4 inches across, and maybe more. BTW, this is one rose that we did disbud for most of its first year here. Jeri |

| Oh, goody, I was hoping they would get bigger. I haven't disbudded, obviously, and she's still growing gangbusters. It won't be long before she outgrows her five gallon. Bon Silene grew like this and was huge in no time. Others just dawdle along. |
