Kippy, I took a photo of Safrano this morning. I don't know how often you have cooler temps (70sish) but this rose is beautiful in the spring and fall...Beautiful mahogany new growth and very healthy.

Thank you Susan, that is very pretty!

More to research!

In my opinion, there is no opening rose bud, modern or "old," more beautiful than that of 'Safrano' when the opening is not being rushed along by hot weather. This, the amiable vigor of the plant, its floriferousness, and its good supply of not only seed but also pollen all make up for the casual form (OK--I'll say it: "formlessness") of the open flower, the so-so fragrance, and its quick loss of color when it expands. 'Safrano' is the good friend who's always there for you, and whom you know will *always* be there for you, no matter what.

I agree completely Odinthor. When it's good it's really really good and when it's not good (cause it's never really BAD) it's a reliable, vigorous and healthy rose here.
The glow from the bud is so beautiful. Too bad it is raining today.

I have a bush of Safrano which is about 40 years old. It has scattered bloom now, but starts its "Spring" flush in Jan here - I can't wait. It is one of the most elegant roses I have, and always seems to have some bloom on it. Mine is growing next to an old red china - perhaps Cramoisi Superior - and some of their canes intertwine, making the most lovely color combination. I will try to take a picture of it when they are both in bloom.

Jackie I'm glad you posted this. How big is your Safrano? I have been wondering what to put with it (in the ground on fortuniana). I have Cramoisi in a pot and that sounds like a lovely combination. Please do post a photo? Post lots of Spring flush photos because by January I am going to need a rose fix really badly. It's rained all day here with incredible gusts of wind.
