To strip or NOT to strip, that is the question. Whether tis better for the rose to drop the ugly brown aphid-sooty leaves on its own or for me to gently remove them? It seems my roses are pushing new growth before the old leaves fall off. When I pull off the entire leaflet to the cane there is a pink bud. Am I damaging the new growth or endangering it? I just totally defoliated Marie Pavie and now she is all pink teeny sprouts but it seems most of my roses are doing this.... Thanks! Susan

In zone 7, new growth just emerging in late fall is not going to bloom or make it through the winter, so I wouldn't encourage it to pop. I would remove only leaves that are dying. As a sanitary measure, you can strip the roses after they go dormant, if you feel like it. This might be at the end of November.

Ok. Thanks Michael. They just look so nasty. If it were August would it be okay to strip it off to the cane. IE does the new growth need that protection? Susan

If you were in Arizona, the canes as well as new growth would welcome shade from the old leaves. In Nashville I doubt if it were any loss, even in August. However, insofar as the leaves are green under the sooty mold etc., they would be contributing some energy to the plant until they start dying.
