I have one of its children -- 'Orfeo' -- trained around the trunk of my scalped Callery pear. Though mine hasn't bloomed yet, based on pictures posted on HelpMeFind, I think it's clear that it gets its flower-form from 'Curly Pink', and it's color and climbing-habit from 'Guinee'. I look forward to next year when (hopefully) I get to see those flowers in-person.

Curly Pink is very healthy, very vigorous, and a favorite in my front HT garden. A very voluptuous bush ... give her room because she's gonna want to get wide.

I just planted Orfeo this summer. No flowers yet. I can't wait!

I'll be a monkey's uncle. I HAD to order Orfeo. YIKES. And, I requested another Curly Pink. Glad to know she is vigorous. The bloom and the scent! Ahhhh. Love it.

Like I said, my 'Orfeo' hasn't bloomed yet, but it certainly has put on growth. I think I'll be planting a type-2 clematis between it and the tree, using 'Orfeo' as its trellis.

August 10, 2013 -- just planted, its two main canes trained to "hug" the trunk and eventually meet on the other side.

Last week, after mulching all the beds. You can't see 'Orfeo' very well here, but it gives perspective on where it fits in relation to the rest of the bed. It's wrapped on the scalped Callery pear, with most of the new growth facing the deck (so next year's flowers can be seen from there).

Pretty vigorous huh? My Crepuscule is growing at that rate too. So...inquiring minds wanna know what else is in the bed AND what Clematis are you thinking? I'm thinking of putting Duchess of Albany with MAC.

I'm thinking about purplish/bluish type-2 clematis, a couple of montana (type-1) clematis, and a couple of Autumn-blooming fragrant type-3 clematis (like 'Rubromarginata' and Clematis virginiana). The plan is to attach bird-netting against the fence, and use that to attach the climbing roses. Then I'll stick a type-2 clematis between each climbing rose, and also sow sweat-pea seeds along the fence.

What's in the bed? I added arrows and numbers to the last pic I posted previously.

Fence Climbers:

1 -- 'Purple Skyliner'
2 -- 'Ferdinand Pichard'
3 -- 'Yellow Sweetheart, Climbing'

Not shown in the pic, but continuing against the fence to the left of 'Purple Skyliner' is 'Bubble Bath', then "Bleu Magenta", then "Darlow's Enigma" in the back corner behind the pine tree.

Deck-Railing Climbers

4 -- 'Georg Arends' (hard to see in this pic, but he's there, behind the tree trunk)
5 -- 'Nouveau Monde'
6 -- 'Reine des Violettes'

Front Row, against the log-edging

7 -- 'Botzaris'
8 -- 'Mme Dore'
9 -- 'Tamora'
11 -- "Rose de Rescht" (more middle-row placement, but nothing in front of it now)
13 -- 'Lady Hillingdon' (more middle-row placement, but nothing in front of it now)
14 -- 'Mlle Blanche Lafitte'

Middle-Row roses

10 -- 'Quatre Saisons Blanc Mousseaux'
12 -- 'Abraham Darby'
15 -- 'Paul Neyron' (actually against the deck where there's no railing, hence my choosing something thornless for the spot)
16 -- 'Jude the Obscure'
17 -- 'Monsieur Boncenne'
18 -- "Yolande d'Aragon"
19 -- 'Orfeo' (trained onto the tree)
20 -- 'Mme Laurette Messimy' (from Vintage Gardens, showing the yellow petal bases, looking like a pastel 'Comtesse du Cayla')

Wonderful! I cannot wait to watch it grow! I like your ideas.

RE: Curly Pink

I'm a sucker for any Crimson Glory child. Curly Pink has a wonderful overstuffed look & that 'glorious' fragrance.

 o
RE: Curly Pink

Bluegirl, is the fragrance citrus to you? I just love it. She's a rose with presence...thick petals and leaves. Blossom feels more like a Magic 8 ball than a golf ball.
I love any relation of Crimson Glory too.
Susan

RE: Curly Pink

Uhhhmm, I don't recall--& don't have a bloom right now. But I bet it does. Crimson Glory's scent does have a bit of a citrus 'tang'.

Do you have Geranium Red? I finally got it from Vintage but I think RVR has it too. It does have a geranium type bloom in color & petal density. And the scent is very good--reminds me of rose geranium.

 o
RE: Curly Pink

Umm...I love scented geraniums! I don't have Geranium Red. I was looking at my neighbors' porch the other day and thought they had roses growing in shade. They were deep dark geraniums. I love those dark ones. Seems I can't find those here...geraniums available here are all variegated or neon or polka dot or something like it.

RE: Curly Pink

I hope you gave Darlow's Enigma plenty of room. He gets huge. Mine is at least 10 feet tall and almost as wide. And that's after whacking it down to about six feet in February.

 o
RE: Curly Pink

Yes, he has about 6' of space between him and the next rose in the row, and the trunk of the pine tree will block some space for 'Louis Philippe' in front. Right now, "Darlow's Enigma" has two long canes that are a few feet long, and after I put the bird-netting trellis on the fence, he'll be trained to climb there and into the pine tree. I'm hoping that the dappled light he gets will encourage more "up" than "out" growth, but in any case, he'll be trained and whacked into a climber. Time will tell if I underestimated him....

He's behind the pine in the back right corner. The next rose in that bed is planted next to the first arbor vitae trunk to the left. The other roses seen are in the row in front of the railroad ties, at ground-level...and further away than the perspective would indicate. The pics I found start most recently and go backward in time.

A better shot showing "Darlow's Enigma" in the corner behind the pine tree, 'Louis Philippe' in front of the pine tree, and 'Cardinal de Richelieu' at the trunk of the arbor vitae to the left of the pine tree. The rose in front of the railroad ties is 'Souvenir de la Malmaison'.
