She's a knock-out! And to think I used to say things like "I hate orange", and "I hate hybrid teas"...

Really beautiful! Not one I've seen posted about often.

Love those old HTS! Have you grown Betty Uprichard?

I tried to order Betty Uprichard from Roses Unlimited and Rogue Valley, but it wasn't available. Do you grow it?
Janet Inada, at Rogue Valley, has a HUGE Climbing Mrs. Sam McGredy growing at the nursery, and when I was there last April it was just barely beginning to bloom- even with less than half a dozen flowers, the effect was incredible. I love how the color changes from brilliant vermilion in bud to salmon/coral pink when the flower is fully open, with beautiful golden petal bases. Strong colors which manage to be subtle at the same time. Lovely tea scent.
Here is a picture of "Apricot Queen", speaking of older HT's.

If you still want Betty Uprichard, I got Burling's list of roses for fall 2014 from Burlington Roses, and she has this one available. She's also got great bands and very reasonable prices, both for roses and shipping. Burlington roses are highly recommended.

Great pics! It's nice to see you posting on instagram as well.

Cynthia - I've been way behind on some things, but I should get you those other poppy, nigella, and sweet pea seeds in the mail soon! Sorry to be so behind!

I ordered 4 roses from Burlington this summer- including Red Radiance & Madame Butterfly Her rose list is mouth-watering, and her prices are fantastic!

ZJW: that Apricot Queen is GORGEOUS! It seems all the roses I ordered last year were some variety of peach/orange/salmon/pale pink.
I got Betty Uprichard from RU. I also have a tiny band slowly growing.
I'm LOVING Etoile de Feu although it is a really slow grower. My band of President Herbert Hoover really doesn't grow at all but it has a couple of annual blooms.
Pat Austin is a treat and blows out to a real vintage HT look for me.
Boscobel is a GLORIOUS rose in these shades.
I'm also going to try Austin's Janet, said to be best grown as a climber….

Those are beautiful photos... I do think those early HT's seem to have more character than most of the modern ones.

One in that color family that I recently found out about is Pere Dot's 'Radio' from 1937; it's a sport of 'Condesa de Sastago' (whom I also love), and is apparently not sold over here.

How do such amazing roses go out of commerce?

Good heavens Virginia, that Radio is gorgeous! I am a big fan of Dot's roses, only I can't find many in commerce.
I guess fashions just change. Sure wish someone had kept this beauty going. Amazing!

Jay - heavens, no worries about those seeds. I'd actually forgotten that was still in process, so whenever the spirit moves is fine with me. At this point, I can either put the seeds out to overwinter in my zone or save them for early spring to germinate in the cold, so take your time. I appreciate the offer!

Virginia - that is indeed an enchanting photo of Radio, and I tend to drool over the vibrant colors that are often characteristic of Dot roses. Perhaps a factor in their limited commercial availability is a tendency to be fussy about their climate and not like many regions of the country. I think I've heard humidity and temperature swings can do them in for other parts of the country, and for me I can attest that most Dot roses aren't very winter hardy. Still, I have the Dot rose Intermezzo that survived the polar vortex, and it's a lavender of all things, so we can't write off any type of rose even with a shaky history of survival in our area. I would dearly love to see Radio become available, and I'd have to plant it and baby it several times before I would give up on its feasibility in my zone.

Anvil Sparks is the closest to Radio available here and it's a decent grower for the type. The closest to Anvil Sparks is Fiesta, the striped sport of The Queen Alexandra Rose, but that one is DEFINITELY better budded and can be difficult to keep alive long term. Burlington may have Anvil Sparks or might be able to obtain it. She and Sequoia had it in the past. Kim

Lordy, Kim, that's another beauty! I'd actually heard of it under its other name, 'Ambossfunken', but it hadn't occurred to me that it might be available in this country... I didn't even look.

Fiesta's awfully nice-looking as well. I'm such a sucker for stripey flowers...

Thanks,
Virginia

RE: Mrs. Sam McGredy

You're welcome, Virginia! I'm also a big fan of stripes, which is why Ralph Moore and Paul Barden selected this one to name for me. Kim

Kim, I think it's pretty cool to have such a wonderfully stripey rose named for you... couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Well, thank you! I think the rose is cool, too. Kim

RE: Mrs. Sam McGredy

I got them in the mail this morning, Cynthia! It's no trouble at all. I'm all too happy to share my extra seeds/plants/cuttings with other gardeners since I don't have many friends who regularly garden aside from veggies/herbs and succulents. Is anyone up for setting up a Rose/Antique Rose forum seed swap? I can get a thread going this weekend.

Some lovely early HTs are being mentioned here. Purely on the basis of blooms, I also generally prefer earlier HTs to most post WWII varieties save for some odd color breaks.

Your rose is beautiful Kim. You deserve a gorgeous rose!
I guess I like the vintage HTs for their bloom form. I swear if I could have just one rose (as if) I would have to have Louise Catherine Breslau. I just love this rose. She blooms so frequently and the flowers are just so dang happy! She actually grew a bit this summer too. I'm going to invest in having her budded on fortuniana to see how she does…
