I read some good info on a recently revived thread about Sophy's Rose vs. John Clare. I'm considering Sophy's Rose vs Darcey Bussell and would greatly appreciate comparisons or pros & cons of these two. Thanks in advance! Di

I like Sophy's Rose. It's a nice mannerly bush for an Austin. The flowers stay upright. It seems to be more disease resistant than many Austins. The blooms are a dark pink and not the usual Austin types. The blooms are more open and frilly as opposed to a cup shape. Sophy's Rose has no fragrance. I don't have Darcy (yet) so I can't compare.

I love Sophy, just bought another at Chamblees on Friday. Frank, who worked at Chamblees until he passed, was a wealth of knowledge. I asked him once which Austin was his favorite [bear in mind this was 10+ yrs. ago] and he said without a doubt - Sophy. I am still in agreement. I have Darcy and like it but Sophy seems to bloom and grow so well and is so healthy....... Judith

I think I remember reading that Darcey is an offspring of Sophy. Sophy has the better flowers, Darcey has the better plant. They both bloom generously and neither has much fragrance. I kinda lean to Sophy.

Can't comment on Sophy, but I have a potted Darcey, started bare-root last winter, and she has shown terrific growth and mucho flowers. Her plant shape is somewhat irregular, but nothing like the meandering Munstead Wood. Also, I like Darcey's fragrance, and the centers can be amazing! Sylvia

I really like 'Sophy's Rose' for its compact, bushy habit, its fast, heavy repeat, and its striking but amenable color. It is resistant to blackspot in many gardens, but I have a strain that it is susceptible to. It is like a smaller china rose but with better flower form and hardiness. I haven't seen DB.
