Mow and Blow Guys

The mowing guys stopped by the house today to take care of the lawn, and my parents wanted them to trim up the front bed. I was the only one home, and told them to trim the plants, remove the an Indian Hawthorne and the Hybrid Teas (so long poor, gawky, angsty Hybrid Teas), but to leave everything else alone. They did this.

My mother came home while they were working, and she went outside to talk to them about coming again in a few weeks (she wasn't happy about the hawthorne, but it never bloomed). I was inside for a bit before I went outside to leave, and when I walked through the front door I see the guys finishing up a brutal trimming of my 'Iceberg' rose. My jaw dropped. The Iceberg had finally hit its stride this year (7 year old plant) and was about 7 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and a disease-free bloom machine. And they whacked it back.

It turns out my mom wanted them to cut it back for the winter (what?), and they had obligingly pulled out their engine driven trimming machine and mangled the poor thing. The teeth on the trimmer weren't sharp enough to cut all of the way through the tough wood of the rose, and what it couldn't cut through it chewed to pieces.

*sigh*

It will grow back, it always does, but I had hoped to leave it alone this year and let its bark mature so that it would have a more graceful shape. Ah well.

She wasn't getting even for the Hawthorne I hope. Good old Iceberg grows back fast. These at the Huntington got a good trim and bounced right back for fall.

Josh, so sorry to hear this.

One of these days you will need your own garden. When two people have strong but different ideas about what the garden should be, ultimately both will be unhappy.

Oh, no, Josh! That is sad... For whatever reason I don't seem to be able to grow iceberg. I have killed two and my sole survivor never has any leaves. It blooms just the same but looks pitiful!

 o
RE: Mow and Blow Guys

That stinks about the Iceberg, but it will grow back with no problem. The hawthorne... I'm trying to imagine my daughter telling the yard guys to dig anything out without my permission, and, lol... no.

RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Poor Iceberg, poor Josh.

I can sympathize. Planted 3 Caldwell Pinks on my Mom's & uncle's graves this spring. The creeps mowed 'em flat & the heat finished them off.

I'm replanting between the stones & going to wedge rocks underneath. I secretly feel like surrounding them with 12" of re-bar sunk around the plants--but don't want anyone to get hurt (or not much I don't)

Rosefolly,

I agree. My own patch of earth would be great!. I am grateful for the dirt I manage here at the house, it just gets difficult sometimes when I try to explain to non-garden savvy parents why it is, in fact, absolutely necessary that I continue to bring home plants. Lol.

About the Hawthorne: that side of the bed is due for a revamping soon! The thing was actually supposed to come out, but I just asked the yard guys to do it while they were here. When I pointed out another two Hawthornes crammed behind Iceberg, my mom had them pull those out as well. She just didn't like that the bed looked so bare and that I had them do it without asking first. All's well that ends well though, those things never bloomed and they will all eventually be pulled out.

I would make clean cuts, not leaving the mangled bits. Better for the plant. 'Iceberg' can use a hard prune every five years or so.

Update:

When I inquired about my parents' plans to renovate the front beds, they told me that they wanted, "more shrubs and less roses." (There are only 3 of my roses in the bed).

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how that could be possible. Less roses? Is that even a real thing? Will report back when I come to a rational explanation.... Lol

I'm another one. I can not grow Iceberg to save my life. I've had it own root, grafted on Huey and Fortunina. I have a "cl. Iceberg" that needs to be dug out. I've been hoping against hope that it would at least be a one cane wonder.

Josh start bringing your Mom bouquets of roses and see what happens. : )

RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Hmmmm, there would be no 'LOL' should any of my offspring order plant removals in my absence.....and might, instead, be some hasty suitcase packing.
Sorry, Josh, but that was outrageous (ah, but the self-obsessed world of youth).
Not keen on the title either - mow and blow guys, seems to imply they were somehow at fault. I struggle with this, since I have been a jobbing gardener (aka mow and blow) for the past decade. So, whilst my wages have been paid by a great many people who have neither the time nor inclination to do it themselves, I know what I am doing and charge accordingly. Don't get many complaints.

RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Years ago I had the same experience of coming home to mangled roses when all they were supposed to do was mow the lawn front and back. I've never seen such chewed up branches in my life. I was beside myself, but I cut everything back and in a few weeks the darn things grew back bushier than ever.

Camp, you are a genuine gardener and can have no knowledge of the abysmal ignorance of our mow and blow "gardeners" here. I'd let you happily loose in my garden to do what you will to any plant while I went shopping. These people you have to stand over with an eagle eye because they know practically nothing other than grass. There may be exceptions but I haven't encountered them. Not in this life would I let one loose in my garden.

Hoovb,

Actually, I do! I brought in a handful of the smelliest, fattest Juse blooms the other day and she quite enjoyed them. I guess I will just have to keep working on 'em. My dad loved Reines Des Violettes' first bloom here. Maybe they can be swayed.

Ingrid,

The aftermath really is flooring, isn't it? Iceberg will spring back again, but it may be another year before it recovers to its full glory.

Camp,

The Hawthorne was already tag for removal; my dad and I had discussed how they needed to go because they did not get enough sun to bloom. Believe me, I fear what would happen to me if I truly commandeered the landscaping! And Ingrid hit it right on the head: there is an extreme difference between a professional gardener, and the mow and blow guys we have here. They're fine chaps, and really only doing the best they can with what they know, but I still keep an eye on them to make sure the roses come out unscathed. I'm sure your clients don't have to worry about any of that!

The guys that mow my yard in Texas hardly speak English, let alone know more than how to mow, edge and blow. They are incredibly hard workers and do a great job, though. The other crew (my son's company) that comes in to help me from time to time knows more, but not to touch the roses, or #1 son will face the wrath of Mom!

Camp,

I just need to let you know that I am still guffawing about you referring to your posterity as "offspring." I sincerely enjoy your humorous syntax.

I gave the neighbors mow and blow guy a tour today....caught him walking the street peaking over the hedge to check out the garden.

Pointing out a few antique roses too

What did he think Kippy?

RE: Mow and Blow Guys

I completely understand. My parents never understood my garden. My dad especially wanted to cut it all down and put in grass. Before I planted anything, He would never water our yard and so it was really just weeds that he would mow twice a month. The neighbors must have hated it, seeing the weeds flowering. I came along and planted herbs and then annual flowers later and finally roses. My dad just saw it as a takeover and not a well cared for landscape design. There was always tension there. I wish you luck, people who know nothing about plants don't care what wonderful thing is out there. I've never understood it. Some people just don't like plants at all. You will just have to believe in yourself, in the long run it will pay off. The garden only gets more beautiful the more you give to it. Sorry you have to struggle as I did.

 o
RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Josh - I usually refer to them as ingrates, idlers, dolts and skivers.

Who would have guessed how much I love them all.

 o
RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Josh,

I showed him Lady Ann Kidwell and Archduke Charles.

But the one that impressed him the most was...Don Juan. Of course he is a very mature and very happy rose and does get right in your face.

RE: Mow and Blow Guys

Sorry to hear about your Iceberg taking a beating, Josh.
I feel your pain, definitely been there myself. Sounds like you have a great attitude though.
