A Bit of This and That

Since it's gotten a bit cooler and the roses are looking somewhat better, in spite of the recent drying Santa Ana winds, I've had the urge to take more pictures. I hope I haven't bored anyone to tears yet, and my dearest wish would be that many more of you would post rose and garden pictures, especially since I know that there are many gardens much more beautiful than mine, but we seem to have some camera-shy members, or more modest ones, who can never post enough for my taste. Maybe this will lure out some of them.

Your bouquets are luscious, Ingrid. I love the variety of blooms--I do the same thing this time of year, casually picking what still is blooming and looks best, and the results are always beautiful. I am quite envious of your lovely Young Lycidas blooms. It looks like he as come through for you after all, with that deep rich color so hard to define. My YL is through for the season since temps have cooled down drastically. Diane
Here is a pic from much earlier in the season of our big snowball bush and a lone bloom in the bird bath.

Ingrid, thank you for the prod to begin posting pics. I have good intentions. Just have to get to it. I wonder if it would be alright to post pics some from past years - I didn't take many this year.

I always enjoy your beautiful garden. Lou

I love that picture, Diane! You never see snowball bushes around here but your picture brought back fond memories of my childhood, when even the name seemed funny since snowballs weren't flowers!

I'm afraid I mixed up pictures and posted two almost identical ones of Young Lycidas. So frustrating when I can't get these simple things right. The bush has a few more buds but hopefully in its second year next spring there will be more of a show.

Beautiful roses Ingrid and nanadolls. I wish I could provide you with some photos as I love taking them. Unfortunately we have had a few hard frosts and there is nothing left. The evergreen bushes that I chose for winter foliage the big 4 legged slugs came and stripped. So I vicariously live through you folks in warmer climates....so keep'em coming!

Ingrid--La France is beautiful. I hope YL is doing better for you and giving you a good fall flush. Thanks for sharing.

Diane--that's a beautiful pic of snowball.

Here's a little bouquet (Young Lycidas and Jude the Obscure) I clipped on Saturday.

I love your Young Lycidas, just may have to get one of those!

There's a wonderful freshness and breadth to your garden, Ingrid. You read about "borrowed landscapes" that enhance a garden -- but you have really wedded the softness of flowers, with the solidity of stone.

And, btw, I have seen "Spice," and been left unimpressed. Thank you for showing me its beauty.

Ingrid, I share your sentiment regarding having an insatiable desire to look at roses. I especially like to see roses in the garden or to have the ability to see the entire bush. Your garden is beautiful, balanced, and in tune with the environment around you. When I think of those who have provided inspiration for me to grow O.G.R.'S etc., you and your garden come to mind. Nanadoll, Jerijen and so many others do too. I hope that someday soon I can contribute to the photos here, as I have ripped out so much of my garden.

Yesterday as my husband and I picked citrus fruit off of our Frankenstein tree, we noticed that a branch from Joseph's Coat had grown right into the bird feeder. One rose was in full bloom and one was showing color. We had hoped to take a photo but became so swamped yesterday that we forgot.

Congratulations with Young Lycidas. It looks as if it is coming into its own.

Beautiful bouquet, lovely landscaping.

I tried several times to grow a snowball, but no luck. Gorgeous bush.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your very nice comments. prickles, that is a gorgeous bouquet. It seems as though your YL may have more petals than mine, and wonder whether that may happen as the rose matures.

Lou, we don't care whether your pictures are from last year. You should feel free to show anything you like. You know we're going to enjoy them.

I'm especially gratified about the comments that I've managed to integrate the garden into the background because that's been one of my main goals. Jeri, what you said struck me as being almost poetic and deeply touched and pleased me. You've seen countless gardens and your approval means much to me.

desertgarden, I'm honored that you feel my garden has inspired you. It means that I've passed on the inspiration of the many gardens that have helped me to make mine what it is. The influence other gardens have on ours is a wonderful thing, especially since in spite of that each garden is still completely individual, which is as it should be.

Wish I could just sit in your garden and take it all in. The vistas are amazing! Ingrid, could you tell me the name of the rose in the last bouquet photo (right before La France)? It is facing the viewer. Pink, with deeper pink closer to the center? It is gorgeous.
YL is a beauty! I'll be damned if I have any room to plant any more beautiful roses! It's sad....
But I do have a "what to plant if I shovel prune" list and I'll be adding YL to that list.
Thanks again!

Ingrid,
Your garden and your views are absolutely breathtaking: really like how you're incorporating your natural surroundings by integrating them, working with them--exactly as Jeri so beautifully said "wedded the softness of flowers, with the soldity of stone."
Yes, the petal count will increase as the plant matures, and so does the size of the flower! I really should post a bush shot of YL but it's positively disheveled, with new long canes growing every which way, and old thin canes flopping down, spilling out of the pot etc. and, evidently, losing a continuous fight with the gardener's weed-wacker.

Beautiful bouquets--and wonderful panoramas behind your luscious roses. If you lift your eyes above garden level in my yard, all you get to see is my neighbors' ugly garages blocking your views. Alas!

Wonderful bouquets, the colors are beautiful. They brighten a cool autumn day.

Ingrid, stunning roses. Thanks for posting.

RE: A Bit of This and That

Susan, the rose you inquired about is Souvenir d'un Ami, a beautiful rose when she's good, which for me is not very often. A real diva, she'll be covered with blooms for a week or two and then sulk for many months, producing either no flowers or very malformed ones.

Thank you all for the very complimentary remarks. The garden is finally emerging from its summer doldrums and beginning to show more blooms. We consider ourselves immensely fortunate to have the views we do.

I'm glad to know that the blooms of YL become larger and fuller. The only problem I see with this plant (other than that I believe it's virused) is that the branches are rather thin and don't hold the blooms up very well. Actually the lower leaves also look rather shabby. prickle's comments seem to bear out that this rose may have some issues. Still, I'm withholding judgment until it matures.

This is Iceberg, Reine des violettes and Wartburg 77 in a glass bowl on my desk, shot on October 12. They may be the last of this year's roses.
