| I have ordered these 3 Austin roses. I live in east Texas where the sun can get blistering hot. Should I plant these roses where they can get afternoon shade or will they be OK in full sun all day? I mulch and water well. Any other advice about these 3? I understand Cressida is prone to blackspot but dont care - love the blooms. Thanks.... |

| I have no experience with your climate, so I'm not addressing that issue. However, I grow Leander in two locations. One is full blazing sun against a chain link fence, and the other is on the just-off-north side of my house. It gets some morning sun, midday shade, and a bit of late afternoon sun. Both roses bloom well. The one in the shade may get a bit more PM than the other, but neither one gets it badly enough to be a problem for me. We get some hot weather, but not as much as you do. | 'Cressida' I would give partial shade because the foliage spacing is rather wide, so I get quite a bit of sunburn on the canes. Also the flower is quite delicate, and will last longer with some shade. Lovely fragrance on a lovely somewhat irregular flower--'Cressida' is sort of the prototype for 'Evelyn' to me. Coarse growth, stiff, large, awkward canes, nasty large prickles. |

| I adored my Cressida. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it gets hot, but not Texas hot. I am afraid I had to shovel prune Cressida this year after about 12 years of growing (she was one of my first David Austins). She was in full sun. The problem over time was black spot. The blooms ended up too heavy for the stems. Her blooms are large, delicate and gorgeous. Good luck! I might go for some midday shade in your case. I tried to post a photo, but the file was too large. |

| I have a good spot for Cressida behind my horse barn that is in a corner by Russelliana - it will get afternoon shade from the barn. Soil is amended well and I water everything in that bed regularly. I have seen/smelled the blooms and it will be worth it to give this rose extra care. I have these roses coming from Hortico and they are on their way, so wanted to get spots picked before they arrived. Thanks for the advice! I have sunny spots for Lucetta and Leander.....I do water and mulch well.... |
