The season starts with the early yellows. Rosa hugonis is the oldest of the ones I have.

Rosa hugonis

A main season rose scene. Oelleit Flammand is one of my favorite gallicas. Hebe's Lip is the ivory in the middle, and The Bishop is on the right.

A very interesting rose that isn't seen or discussed much. Rosa moyesii 'Geranium'. It's planted in a horrible place, where the local DOT clears it out every few years.

Baltimore Belle blooms near the end of the main season flush. I'm growing it on a split rail fence, and it can get quite large.

Oooh, Baltimore Belle is gorgeous!

RE: Whats your favorite OGR?

OMG Mads - heartbreakingly beautiful space - something to aspire to, lush, fecund, gorgeous.

Moyesii is frequently discussed by me, at (tedious) length as it is my top species rose and one I will never be without, either Geranium or any of the various cultivars.

However, since you have set a precedent for naming more than just one rose, I will add another white - the modest, but perfect spinossisima Double White

campanula, gorgeous Dbl White. I'm usually not such a big fan of white blooms but these are stunning. wow

That spinossisima Double White is a beauty. Is it once blooming?

My favorite Old Garden Rose is SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON a pale pink Bourbon hybridized by Jean Béluze in France, 1843.

Some things there I wish I could grow, out here in La-La Land. Beautiful things.

Rosa Rugosa followed by Souv. de la Malmaison.

RE: Whats your favorite OGR?

'Green Mantle' was the first rose to bring shrub roses and OGRs to my attention, but Father Hugo's rose was the first one I bought. Over the course of the last 23 years it has gotten huge with a spectacular display only to die back to a few canes and then grow huge again. Every time it dies back I get worried and give it a little extra attention but it eventually rebuilds itself again. It is certainly one of my favorites.

That 'Double White' is so pretty, campanula. I wonder if it is only available in England. I didn't see it listed at HMF. I love the back of the flower and the stems and buds. It really does look perfect.

Charles de Mills.

Prairiemoon, it looks like it's listed on helpmefind under Double White Scots. If anybody knows where it can be purchased from, let us know!

Though I cannot grow it, my dream rose is 'Königin von Dänemark.'

Thanks, Chris, I did find it under that name. :-)

madgallica, your yellow rose reminded me that when we moved here, there was a Harrison’s Yellow under a Maple tree that I was surprised bloomed every year. I wish I knew then that it was a good old rose and that we still had it. I can just imagine how nice it would have been growing in sun without tree roots.

Your second photo reminds me of summers in Maine. Just picture perfect! I can see the very pretty color of your Bishop rose. I would love to see a close up of that if you had it. I saw it offered on Pickerings site, but it didn’t look like that.

Baltimore Belle is very pretty too. I love all that white. Is it fragrant?

That photo of SDLM is amazing! And ‘Konigin von Danemark’ too!

Souvenir de la Malmaison / Duchesse de Brabant / Reine des Violettes ... 3-way tie for me.

Thanks for posting that pic of SDLM, Patrick! I had lost it somehow. I'm very glad to have it again! (My gardenweb name used to be Archduke many years ago).

RE: Whats your favorite OGR?

Prairiemoon,

Years ago, when there were more northerners on the forum, "How do I prune Harison's Yellow?" was a FAQ. Unless you give it a lot of space in full sun, it is a very awkward, gangly shrub. The early yellows make much better plants IMHO.

The 'real' The Bishop is supposed to be a proliferator. Mine definitely has that problem. When they are good, they are very, very good, but when they are bad, they are horrid. I moved a piece this fall to the vegetable garden, and will yank the big one once I know the baby is established.

I didn't think Baltimore Belle had fragrance until I took it to a garden meeting along with some other 'samples'. When they were passed around, that one got a lot of 'ooh's and 'aahs', and 'you've got to smell this one'. Odd because usually the stinkiest thing I bring is R. eglanteria.

RE: Whats your favorite OGR?

madgallica, I wonder why there are not as many northerners on the forum, just curious. Fewer people growing roses, maybe.

Yes, that seems to be something I'm going to have to be careful of with the Old Garden roses, is how large some of them can get and the suckering especially. I'm glad I have the winter to research it.

Thanks! :-)
