Carolyn Parker has made a beautiful entry of my garden in Rose Notes today. www.rosenotes.typepad.com It is so heartening to me this time of year when spring is just a memory to see the garden in its glory and to be thought of by someone like Carolyn.

Thank you Roseberri. I don't have to go to a job. I devote one day a week to ceramics and my house isn't very clean.

"I don't have to go to a job. I devote one day a week to ceramics and my house isn't very clean." Now THAT is my idea of the perfect life... plus time for the dogs and bunnies ;-) So many people decline when they retire because they have nothing to do, I can't imagine that as long as I have a garden I can tend and the health to do it. Pamela, I confess although I've been on this forum, and recognize your forum name along with many others, I'm afraid I've lived under a rock as far as knowing who is a rosarian and what their 'day jobs' are, at least until this year when I started following the Antique forum more. Jeri has been my biggest inspiration since I had the nerve to post her because she lives locally. This year, I saw GramHat on the forum enough that finally got off my keester and made my first order from Vintage. Two orders followed that and I have another for spring including some of your jewels, frankly I can't believe Gregg and Gita are having to cut back considering how many I've ordered ;-) Now I have your garden as another inspiration for our little quarter acre in the local SoCal mountains. Thank you also for sharing your story in Rosa Mundi, I read it this morning. We share a similar childhood in that our elderly neighbor was a similar inspiration to me. Due to circumstances, she was more like my grandmother than my natural ones. My mom loved to garden, but was mostly into azaleas and other ornamentals. Mrs. Barbertini, 'Tini', was a little old Italian lady who taught me how to grow fruits and vegetables, can, make jellies and jams. She had a wonderful arbor with concord grapes that I'm now thinking would have looked awesome with roses. They are wonderful memories, thanks for bringing them back.

Pam, it's such a beautiful garden. The pathways are so inviting, and the abundance of bloom is extraordinary. I like the mix of colors and the different types of roses.

Congratulations Pam. I remember seeing the slide show of your garden on Carolyn's website, back in 2007 when it was first posted. It was a great pleasure to wander vicariously in your garden once again by viewing the photos again. I can only imagine what it would be like to be there at peak bloom in the flesh. Your garden is extraordinary and lovely. So your house isn't very clean? Who needs a spotless house when your world is a spectacular rose garden in the California hills. Congratulations also on having some of your roses made available to others through Vintage Gardens. Rosalia looks like a very beautiful rose. I am always jealous of all you American Rosarians who have that fabulous nursery to provide you with treasures I can only dream of. I've thought of ordering some Brownells and rare Austin's from Vintage on numerous occasions, but I have ordered from US nurseries in the past and shipping rose bands across the border has caused me much grief and many dead plants due to delays. Perhaps one day I will have to make the trip. Cheers, RRL

Pamela, What an honor and so well-deserved. Your gardens are stunning. I am a newbie to roses and have discovered that I find the old roses fascinating ... both in their beauty and their history and preservation. Although I will never have as many as you, I am inspired by your dedication and hard work. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with us, |

Wow, gorgeous Pamela, Thanks for your many inspirations. I will have to show my DH your garden and the comment about not having a very clean house! I also would rather be in the garden rain, snow or shine than to be inside cleaning. Karen.

Your garden is magical! And Carolyn's photos are stunning. What is the name of the red rose on slide number 23 please? I think it is labelled as "pere la chaise" in the photo, but I cannot find it on HMF. Also, do you recall where you got it from? Many thanks! And thank you for sharing your garden with us!

I knew if I put this out there that I would receive these kind and thoughtful responses. For people to share a little bit of themselves too just makes it perfect(please do!) Vettin there is a romantic story behind Pere La Chaise. Michael and I love cemeteries. To us Pere la Chaise is the ultimate. When we were in Paris in 2000 we spent a wonderful rainy November day walking around there. We found a rose growing on the grave of a young boy. It was a small rose with one bedraggled pale orange flower on it. We took one small cutting and brought it home in my suitcase as a memory of Paris. It took and grew amazingly well. We gave it the found name, "Pere la Chaise". I think it might be Baccara.
