If I plant an own-root Charles de Mills...

How far would a single plant fill out? I want something that will fill in to a short thicket and I'm wondering if Charles would do the trick. I'm thinking to get three plants. Don't know how close to put them yet, but its up against a fence. Just let it go to do its thing. Thoughts?

A single own-root specimen of 'Charles de Mills' planted in 1999 is now "a thicket" approximately 25 X 30 feet in size, and still spreading. I may have to resort to "herbicide fencing" to limit it's reach.

Consider yourself warned!

With him planted against the fence, you can mow the suckers that come up in the lawn, but consider whether the neighbor has plantings on the other side that would be invaded.

The nice thing is that the opposite side of the fence (neighbor) is a corn field. There's this weird dead space between back of yard and the field and I thought that Charles gone wild would fill that area nicely. Field gets plowed and planted every spring which should take care of any excessive spreading into that area. My sister could take care in the front to just mow over anything that get out of hand.

Regarding the 25 x 30 size - maybe I just need one plant to get going. :)

What about throwing a second variety in there to duke it out with Charles? Get some contrast of color in the mix.

If you put Belle de Crécy with Charles de Mills you should be able to watch a Clash of the Titans. Judging from my own experience I think perhaps Chuck will win but I'm not quite sure.

"If you put Belle de Crécy with Charles de Mills you should be able to watch a Clash of the Titans."

Lets throw 'La Belle Sultane' in there too, just to be perverse. You won't have to fret about mowing the lawn in ten years.....because you won't have any!

Well...this is for my sister's yard. When it comes to siblings sometimes you do things just to be perverse.

(Insert evil laughter HERE.)
