Baltimore Belle to Climb Small Tree?

| I've read conflicting reports about the size of Baltimore Belle. I have a dying 15-foot-tall flowering plum tree that I would like to cover. I planted a BB from Ashdown a few months ago and was wondering how well it would perform. The tree has a short trunk and is surrounded by good soil, so I was hoping for an umbrella-like effect.
Thanks

| I think that should work. Let me tell you about dying trees though. I'm doing the same thing with a dying plum. Eventually they fall. It didn't stop me this time but it can be such a mess! |

| It should work fairly well, except... Several years ago I had a naturally occuring instances of a R. multiflora growing up and over a staghorn sumac. It worked quite well for several years, and then one winter the entire thing came crashing down. The weight of the rose was just too much for the smothered and dying tree. Since this was in a wild area, I did not feel a great need to clean up the mess. Which was very good because it was a real mess. The highway people eventually got it cleaned up when they replaced a culvert. |

| I was concerned that Baltimore Belle would not be large enough. I wonder how long it would take to cover the tree? This tree is in my small, enclosed front yard. I was going to replace the tree but was worried about removing the trunk and big roots. So I came up with the rambler idea. There are no large limbs, so I don't think it would be a danger if it crashed (would not damage power lines or hit house). A poor picture, but I am talking about the closest tree, to the left in the photo:
Perhaps this is a project best suited to a wilder area? Not that I have one in my small yard. |

| I was going to tell you to go for it ... BB can handle the job, and look great doing it. Then I saw those power lines. Are they as low as they look? Connie |

| The power lines are about 15-20' above the ground. The holly hedge is at the crest of a hill; the trees in the background and the lower-looking power lines are across the street. A previous owner planted theses trees, I think to detract the eye from the power lines - one reason I was hesitant to chop it down. Maureen |
