Feels like we just got back from Gettysburg and now are planning another Victorian adventure for next year. Louisville is having a birthday party for the Belle of Louisville, she will be 100 and other old steamboats and historical boats are all coming to the Ohio river to celebrate. There will be a steamboat race, a grand parade of boats on the water, a fireworks evening cruise and other fun events. The official name is Centennial Festival of Riverboats These are the riverboats coming so far Belle of Louisville, KY Happy Birthday Belle! It's pretty exciting that all these riverboats will be in one place and to get to see and ride several in one weekend is probably a once in a lifetime thing. We are also going to the Victorian ball that is planned. What gardens can I see in the area? We will also have a few days after in Kentucky to see things and I don't want to miss some wonderful gardens because I didn't know they were there. Thanks everyone.

Yes to seeing roses. I'll get back to you with a couple of ideas (when I remember the names of the gardens.)
|
I don't know about roses specifically, but in Lexington, about 1 1/2 hours from Louisville is the Henry Clay Garden. It's been a few years since I've seen it but I remember it being lovely. The Garden Club Of Lexington revived it in 1950 and has cared for it ever since. From Louisville if you took US Hwy 60 instead of the interstate it might take a bit longer, but it would be a breathtakingly lovely drive through the heart of Kentucky's bluegrass and past beautiful horse farms. Maybe someone closer to the area could tell us if it has any roses. http://www.bluegrasswinners.com/index.php/gcl-at-work

In Louisville itself is Cave Hill Cemetery. It's 150+ years old and officially an arboretum. A fantastic example of 19th century landscape architecture; it is the most beautiful place in the whole city! Again it has been a while since I visited and I don't know about roses specifically.

We were in that part of the country late October several years ago. The state cemetery in Frankfurt (the Capital) still had roses blooming including Old Blush. North of the Ohio River, in the town of Madisonville Indiana, a historic home called Lanier House is down on the river and has a historic rose garden and a really lovely setting. In Lexington KY, if you want to see thousands of different roses, the Arboreteum across the street from the football stadium has a huge collection of all the classes of roses that will grow there. There collection of species roses is neat and the big roses are worth visiting. This could be a neat circle drive from Louisville up to Frankfurt, to Madisonville, to Lexington and then fast drive back to Louisville.

So many wonderful choices. We want to see Cave Hill and I've heard that it is so beautiful and serene. Once we crossed over the Mississippi river and into Memphis and then on to the mountains and through Virginia I was in Heaven. Didn't want to come home at all. ( poor roses! ) I got to see a bit of Ohio on the way home but I missed Kentucky so I'm very excited to go back again. All these years of running around the southwest, I never knew what I was missing.

Kitty...I live in Louisville and will do some investigating for you! I know you will love Cave Hill. It is a must see. I would love for you to visit my garden....but it is not a show place! I will try and put a list together for you. I love our Waterfront Area and the Belle. This will be a fabulous experience. Kentucky is a beautiful state and I love Louisville. So much to do here. SO glad you are coming. Lesley
