rain!

Usually in most years getting rain in November is not a big deal, but except for one storm two months ago, the 2 day moderate rain storm we just got is our first material rain since last December (2012)!

We turned off our irrigation system a couple of days ago in anticipation of this rain (we got about .3 inches - enough to water the garden for a week or so) - the irrigation system had been on continuously since the beginning of January (almost 11 months). Unheard of - usually Jan and Feb and March are so wet here we have flooding, but not last winter.

Our water rates which are always very high automatically go way higher in the Winter, when theoretically folks are not having to water their gardens, so that was another relief - my household budget does not anticipate paying Winter gas & electricity costs, AND huge water bills.

So, off I go to the store, with everything delightfully wet and muddy and sloppy. The enormous amount of leaves all over our garden are sitting in sodden piles, at least the ones that were in the process of getting dealt with before it started raining. The garden looks a mess, but I know that secretly it is rejoicing!

Lucky you! Hoping it comes south, too.

RE: rain!

Woohoo! I love the way a garden perks up after a good rain.

I'm about to break out the drums and face paint to do a rain dance here. We've been dry for a couple of weeks and I'm being a grump about the prospects of hand watering after summer.

Wow - the rain was supposed to be over today, but it started raining again hard about 3 hours ago, and now the gutters are actually running in the street, and the "river" that runs down one side of our driveway is running - Yay!

Jealous!!!

Hardly enough to get the ground damp here. But hopefully more is on the way

RE: rain!

I stand out in the heavy overcast morning and hope for rain

I weed and move bags of camellia soil ingredients and the clouds get thick and dark. The wind starts and it gets cold. The sun is long gone. Just one teeny weeny bit of moisture on my cheek. Not a proper raindrop. It is moist up there but nothing reaches the ground. At least there isn't much evaporation from the soil. Maybe tonight or tomorrow.

Please

We ended up with the predicted ~half inch, so I am very happy. Wishing the many blessings of just the right amount of rain to all of you, everywhere.

I'm hoping so much it will come our way. It's been predicted to do so but I've learned not to count on rain until I can feel the drops on my upturned face.

RE: rain!

We got our first rain this fall, yesterday, with a light drizzle today.
Thank God ! I needed the break. I was so tired yesterday, that I hardly got any inside work done.

Today, I was down in the carport splitting wood and cleaning pallets, so I didn't touch housework again. It's supposed to be clear for the next two weeks, so I plan to continue ignoring it for a while longer !

Smiles,
Lyn

We are supposed to get rain over the weekend and well into next week, they're even predicting sleet in some places, although I've noticed the weather people tend to push it a little on what really happens. We sure need it!

RE: rain!

My deliverance arrived. I think we got close to two inches.

Over a quarter of an inch here. I washed my car to make it happen, and it worked. Yipee!!!

 o
RE: rain!

Thank you for washing your car Hoovb!!

We got about an inch overnight if all the buckets in the garden are some what correct.

RE: rain!

It seems as though it has been raining non-stop since yesterday afternoon. The yearly average was exceeded during our monsoon season.

RE: rain!

We had some, but not nearly as much as expected, since today, which was supposed to be quite rainy, the stupid system veered off to the northeast. It was completely dry under the juniper hedge, but I hope the roses in the open derived some benefit. Hopefully there will be more next week.

Hooray for those of you who got an ample amount. I can imagine the relief and good feeling.

Kippy and I don't live all that far apart -- but our little Valley is surrounded by hills that push rain cells away. She got almost an inch of rain -- we got almost a HALF inch.

--SIGH--

Still, a half inch is better than I expected.

I could, however, have done without the strong, cold East winds that have blown here all day.

If this doesn't abate, this could turn out to be the first time in many years that we have to shut ourselves in the bedroom, and just let the rest of the cold house fend for itself. These situations used to happen every year or two -- but I think it's been a decade. The wind is showing no hint of dropping, and it's getting colder.

Proving how close and yet so different the weather is. Kind of nice and sunny here. A few big clouds and just a mild breeze.

Edited to add...moms place got rain but not mine

The trees got a bath and that's very good. I saw snow down low on our side of Mt. Baldy as the sun set. The clouds made an opening and the beautiful pinks of the sky tinted the snow against the blue of the mountainside. Tomorrow I will look again and enjoy the view. Big Bear must be beautiful with snow but the clouds were covering it when I looked toward San Bernadino. I love the smell of the air after the rain. For the last few days, I haven't had to water. It's been nice to have that time to do other things. The forecast is for more rain again on Thanksgiving day.

I'm getting a nice mossy look to my bricks and the ferns look very happy as well. The cats have been moody and look at me as if I can do something about it being wet outside.

RE: rain!

It is still raining here!! I do not believe it has stopped, at all, since Thursday afternoon....it is welcomed, as I believe my drought tolerant plants can handle it, but so unusual.

RE: rain!

We have warmed up again - sunny and mild, but they are predicting another larger storm this coming Wed and Thurs (Thanksgiving). If that happens I will be extra thankful!

RE: rain!

Lots of rain here; very welcome.

 o
RE: rain!

We had .12 inches, which penetrated about 11/2 inches into the soil. I hope the rain forecast for Thanksgiving is accurate!
