I gave my brother a plant of Lamarque, and now I am having second thoughts. Did I give him a rose that is going to be too big for him to manage? I was thinking he could grow it horizontally on a chain link fence. Would it be better climbing a tree? Or should I encourage him to pass it along to someone else? He lives in central Florida Rosefolly

We used to grow it on an 8-foot pillar. It was rather large for that structure, but certainly not a "house eater"

Paula, a friend grows Mermaid on a fence, and I'm sure you've heard how big that one is. It looks beautiful and stretches out a long way along the fence. So I think the chainlink fence would be a great option. I've often wished that I had low fences for climbers to grow horizontally rather than vertically. It has to be easier, seems to me. No reaching over your head tying, and getting one up into a tree ain't easy - at least I haven't been very successful. He'll also have more blooms on those horizontal canes. As long as he's got about 40 ft of fence - just to be safe, he should be fine. Just think...he'll have a whole "hedge" with only one hole to dig. Sherry

Okay, then he will be fine. Thanks.
