Okay, my ACTUAL last Vintage order

Just received an email from Gita letting me know my 'Frederic II de Prusse' and 'Milkmaid' are on their way. Can't wait to get these rare beauties grown up and installed in the cemetery.

This will (most likely) be my last Vintage order.

Josh, these are both gorgeous roses. I assume you're aware that they bloom only once. Since these are for the cemetery and I believe you live in an area where the climate is not too harsh, I wonder whether interest in the cemetery roses by visitors might not be heightened if there was also bloom later in the year. I know it's a tradeoff, since some of the most beautiful and spectacular old roses do only bloom once. I'm assuming you may be trying for a judicious blend of both kinds, while also keeping in mind that historical roses would be very appropriate for an older cemetery. This post is not meant as a criticism in any way, and I would love to know what your criteria are for choosing the rose varieties that are to be placed in the cemetery.

Ingrid,

Thoughts well received! As I have been choosing roses they usually follow a couple of criteria, though FDP and Milkmaid are exceptions.

1. Is it disease, heat, and drought resistant for N. Texas?
2. Does it have a nice fragrance, a shapely form, and good rebloom?
3. Is it an antique or early 1900s?
4. Does it represent a class of roses which are not represented in the collection currently?
5. Is it unusual or uncommon so that it will draw the attention of those tired of the everyday roses?
6. Is this rose rare and will the protected status of the cemetery give it a safe haven to grow so that future generations will enjoy it?

They are in order of most important to less important.

As for once-blooming, I have such a great core of Chinas and Teas lined up for inclusion that I believe there will be great color year-round. As luck would have it, the fence of the cemetery facing the road already has several magnificent Lady Banks (White and Yellow), which are traffic stoppers in the spring. There are places available on the fence where I think I would like to grow Milkmaid. FDP I wanted not only for his deep purple color, but for his representation of the oft-forgotten Hybrid Chinas. In the end, I have decided this cemetery will be a collection of roses more than anything. The historical nature of the cemetery guarantees it is safe from destruction, and so these roses will have a home for a long time. I would see to it that many different types of roses, all well suited for Texas, would find a place here so they can not only be enjoyed but preserved as well.

As for the fall show, I have been playing with the idea of including various hip-bearing roses such as 'R. Pomifera' or 'R. Glauca' which will provide a very unique aspect to the garden. Hopefully, one which will be symmetrical to the Lady Banks big show in the spring.

Gotta tell you, this young man's mind works like a well-oiled machine; I can't keep up with him at all, he is just thinking all the time! Too bad he is stuck with a 73 year old woman who can't see, tell directions right, remember things, lol! But we have a good time together, he puts up with me and I enjoy him so much!

Josh I really like the consideration that the cemetery will be a safe haven for rare roses - great idea!

A truly excellent answer, Josh, thank you so much. I find your criteria for choosing roses to be extremely well-thought out and logical. If all goes well, which I sincerely hope it does, in a few years this cemetery should be a very exciting and interesting place to visit. How cool that we're going to be able to share in your endeavor through your words and pictures!

Thank you Ingrid! My only wish is that I could fast forward a couple of years to see what it will all look like.

Perhaps you could be convinced to visit this spring when Chambersville Tree Farm and Heritage Rose Garden has its dedication ceremony. It is one of the HRF's gardens and hosts more than 145 roses. Connie will be here, and Ogrose and I were just talking about how great it would be if our California friends came for a visit as well. The roses should be in full swing at that time.

Josh, I for one am mulling it over in my mind. I'm not sure whether or not I will be able to come, but I plan to try.

Yes!! I'd love to have as many of y'all come down as possible. I should also have the first few roses in the ground at the cemetery as well and I would love to take you all by there to see!

It would be wonderful to come, Josh, thank you for the invitation. We've just returned from a visit to my brother, who has had multiple strokes, and had to take our two elderly dogs. It turned out to be rather stressful, so I'm not sure if we could manage the trip. I'll definitely give it some thought, though. I would so love to meet you and other friends from the forum.

Ingrid,

If life permits it we would be very excited to have you. If it doesn't work out then we will meet up another time!

Update:

Roses got here today! They look great; Milkmaid is huge and looks pretty vigorous. Frederic II de Prusse showed up with some Blackspot but otherwise looks excellent. To my pleasant surprise it is thornless too! I will definitely take that.
