Cemetery rose ID

Came across this rose in my local cemetery. I'm out here today meeting with the Forrester to discuss planting sites and water hookups for the roses that will be planted here.

It reminds me of a China rose, both in scent and foliage. The kicker is that it is 10' tall at least, if not 12'. I can't seem to come up with an idea of what it might be...

It DOES look like a China. Josh, have you tried to propagate it?

Jeri,

I have not, yet. I just found it today while I was out there. There are 6 of them of this same kind planted there in the cemetery. I will take some cuttings to try to root.

Woah! beautiful. So I want an "Allen cemetery China" when it becomes available, yukyuk :-p (no seriously!)

How old is that cemetery? If you have a chance sometime, there are very old planted cemeteries in Victoria & Columbus. I've seen photos of the Rose Rustlers in Victoria.

Y'know -- the COLOR is very like 'Lady Anne Kidwell.'

And look at those big fat hips! The really commonly found Chinas like Louis Phillip, Mutabilis, Cramoisi Superior, Archduke Charles, don't have such pronounced hips, at least AFAIK.

Noella Nabonnand?

Here is a link that might be useful: NN on HMF

Is it thornless? I keep staring at the pics and can't find any thorns. I'm wondering if it's a huge "Sophie's Perpetual". That rose's flower's will "sun-blush" to a cherry-red, usually after opening but I've noticed mine sometimes starts with cherry-red buds. The scent is surprising -- the plant looks like a China but smells like a Bourbon.

But then again, I've only ever seen a few Chinas in-person...

It wasn't completely thornless. The basal canes possessed thorns, but the laterals did not.

It might just be Sophie's Perpetual now that I take a good look at it. The blooms possessed the typical China "fade to darker color." And the color is spot on for the blooms.

Mine is still a baby, but I haven't found a single thorn yet. However, sometimes "thornless" roses get occasional thorns on old canes. I guess you'd have to ask anyone who has an older "Sophie's Perpetual" if they ever find any thorns. Did it smell like a Bourbon?

Chris,

Considering that I am yet to smell a Bourbon, I couldn't say. I haven't tried growing them here due to oppressive disease pressure here. SDLM is the only Bourbon I have and I hasn't bloomed yet.

The only Bourbon I could really smell was 'Mme. Isaac Pereire.' And she looked so awful here, pore ol' thang, so much of the time, her fragrance couldn't outweigh her flaws for my conditions.

To my nose, 'SDLM' doesn't smell like a typical Bourbon -- more like something to expect from a Tea, and to my nose, just like hyacinths. To my nose, the "typical Bourbon" smells like a sweeter, less sharp version of Damask.

Jeri, did you ever try 'Mme Dore' or 'Mme d'Enfert'? The former reminds me of a dwarf 'SDLM' in habit, and the latter has a Tea-Noisette as a pollen-parent. Perhaps they would work by you? How does the 'Mme d'Enfert' at the SJHRG get by through the seasons?

Sorry, no. I swore off Bourbons long, long ago. I know they are wonderful roses somewhere. It's just that their "somewhere" isn't anywhere near here.

:-)
