As part of my experiment with pushing the zones I got the China Archduke Charles this spring. This was taken on May 23rd when I received it from Angel Gardens. I potted it up to a slightly bigger pot on May 25th. It grew very well and bloomed so pretty! And this is how big it had gotten by August 21st. It's gone into winter storage now. I've really enjoyed watching it develop and hope it will winter for me.

Seil, Best of luck! Angel Gardens has great rose stock so I am optimistic a about your experiment. I suspect it will grow just fine for you. The true test will come when it is large enough to plant into the ground. I suspect a vigorous rose such as this one may far just fine once it is larger. I am interested to see what you find out. I am also trying to push the boundaries of rose growing and am attempting Gallicas here in N. Texas. Perhaps we can pull it off! Josh

'Archduke Charles' is among my favorite roses. As beautiful as it is tough. There are several really old plants in the Sacramento City Cemetery -- outside the boundaries of the official garden. One in particular that I love to visit when we go there -- is on the Drew Family Plot, where the burials were between the late 1880's and 1911. It's one of those plant whose sawed-off stumps demonstrate that it has been cut to the ground multiple times, and survived, and flourished. Jeri

Thanks, Josh! I hope your Gallicas get the chill they need. Funny that we are pushing things in opposite directions. I like the sound of tough, Jeri! I am considering where to plant it but I think that will be a couple of years down the road. I'm sure in my climate it will never get to the robust size it shows in your beautiful picture. I just love all the shadings of color in the blooms!

I love the shadings of color in the blooms, too. And I've seen him considerably taller than that Drew Plot plant. You're right tho -- in your climate, he probably won't get tall. Are you going to grow these guys in pots??? Or outside? I've always been fascinated by the way Lily Shohan grew Tea Roses indoors, through New England winters. Jeri

They'll probably stay in pots for a couple of years until I think they are mature enough to go in the ground and have a chance to winter. Both this one and DdB were small bands and will probably take that long to get too big for the pots. Although, I did grow Reine des Violettes in a pot for 5 years and she's a monster for me. Meantime they'll go into the winter pot ghetto with the rest. I know that will push it to almost zone 7 for the winter. I'm looking for places in the yard that are warm spots naturally to plant them. I have a couple of places up close to the house where they'll get more protection than out in the big beds so they'll probably go there.

Easier to enjoy that way, too. Jeri
