I hiked my self out to the cemetery today on account of the awesome gardening weather! I had finally decided to tackle the job of pruning the old white rose there. I still cannot ID it for the life of me, but I am hoping it will bloom better next year and I can formate an idea. Here's an after shot of the job. I had to go in and remove a lot of old, dead, diseased wood. A lot. By the time it was done I had enough wood to build another rose it seemed like! But the poor thing can breathe now, so I'm hoping it will appreciate the effort and bloom away. I also found a bird's nest in there! I left the old wood it was sitting on - no sense in disturbing someone's home. Josh

Have you photos of the bloom???? Out here in CA, the most-commonly-found white is 'Mme. Plantier.' HER, you can ID in any season, for her leaves are very very distinctive. Jeri

I also took the opportunity to take cuttings of the China rose there. The puppies are 3 feet long each! And the smell is awesome! Josh

Jeri, Nothing worth much of anything. I snapped them back when I was less experienced trying to ID roses. It hasn't rebloomed much since that I have seen, so I will try to get something better in the spring. Josh

That first picture shows an unholy mess. Obviously the poor rose hasn't had someone to care for it in quite some time. How nice of you to leave the bird abode. You can always take it out if no one reclaims it this spring. Ingrid

Ingrid, Agreed! And that first picture is the aftermath of the pruning! It's gonna take a couple of times to get it where it needs to be. After cleaning it up and bleeding all over the thing, I called it quits for today. I have already made peace with the fact that I will need to go back another day and get back at it. Josh

I bet that rose thinks "Whew! THANK YOU!" Maybe it will shoot some new wood next spring. (Man, don't you love fall? I trimmed cedar & agarita & peach trees all morning & burned all afternoon--what a great, mild day)
