| Another of my test roses is the Tea, Duchesse de Brabant. I recieved in on April 18th. I love it when I open a box and there are blooms inside!
Potted up on May 7th.
I have some concerns though. My blooms have been very pale, almost white, this season. The ones I see on HMF seem more pink. Do you think this is the correct rose?
It did seem to get pinker in the fall.
It's grown very well for me and this was taken the end of August.

| Many of my pink roses turn nearly white in hot weather. I don't remember whether the Duchesse does or not. The form of the blooms on your rose look like mine. |

| Do those blooms nod? The Duchesse usually has a nodding habit. Jeri |

| Thanks, Porkpal, that's reassuring! Yes, Jeri, they do nod. I sometimes prop them up to get good photos of them. |

| Just snapped a few pics for you to compare. My DdB are two year old plants. Josh |

| I do that, too, Seil. :-) Josh -- your "babies" are pretty. :-) Jeri |

| My D de B also has very pale flowers at times, and she usually balls at the same time. Your pale ones look beautiful, Seil, not at all like mine. Mine's best blooms are in winter, when they're a rich pink, like Josh's. |

| Seil, Though I hate to be the suggester of bad news, it has also occurred to me that you may not have a true Duchesse de Brabant. Perhaps an email to Angel Gardens with a photo attached is in order? Even in the dead heat of summer here the DdB I have seen retained their shell pink color. I have not seen mine bloom that shade of white before. Jeri, I am very excited about these guys! These three Duchesse along with Cramoisi Supeurieur, Champney's Pink Cluster, and Crepsucule will most likely the the first roses to make it into the cemetery. I like to romanticize the whole thing and tell them that they hold my hopes for a better future - one which has roses adorning the rolling hills of the cemetery meadow. I'm sure if they could, they would roll their eyes at me. Josh |
RE: Duchesse de Brabant

| But you know what IS white? And still sometimes is pink? 'Mme. Joseph Schwartz.' SOMETIMES I have seen DdB with a white Mme. Joseph bloom, and I've seen Mme. Joseph with pink ones. Here are photos of an old MJS in a NoCal cemetery. Sometimes, she is whiter, sometimes, she retains a hint of pink. Jeri |

RE: Duchesse de Brabant

| I could be convinced that Seil's rose is very close to MJS. Josh |
RE: Duchesse de Brabant
| | |
| Yup. So could I. I'd wait and see. Another possibility is that Seil's rose is DdB, and under stress was showing some MJS blooms. Jeri |
RE: Duchesse de Brabant

| I must confess I had doubts that seil's rose was DdB since none of the pictures looked typical to me, especially when compared to Josh's rose. I also had the idea it might be MJS. I had both of these roses, and quite a few MJS roses showed a strong pink tinge. Ingrid |
RE: Duchesse de Brabant

| It looks exactly like my MJS to me. Mine also sometimes shows a little pink, and since it is a sport of DdB, perhaps when the nursery was propagating it the DdB decided to sport to MJS? I was certain that MJS was indeed a sport of DdB and not a seedling when my MJS (which is over 40 years old) suddenly last Spring put out a new basal break that developed into a strong healthy new cane that produced 100% DdB blooms! Jackie |
RE: Duchesse de Brabant
| | |
| I had that happen, Jackie, with 'Mme. Isaac Pereire,' and 'Mme. Ernst Calvat.' The latter is listed as a sport of the former -- but I gather there've always been doubts. In our yard, we got blooms that were MEC with a strip of MIP's raspberry, and some that were half and half -- FINALLY, a few that were wholly raspberry. Jeri |

| i cant view your images for some reason. I have the sport of DbB (Joseph Schwartz) also that has mostly white blooms and an occasional pink one. It's quite lovely! |

| Sorry, Digdahlias, I reorganized some of my albums at photobucket and broke the links. Here they are.
Thanks I appreciate any help you can give me in IDing this rose. |

| seil, I'm sorry to say this just doesn't look like Duchesse de Brabant. Even in my extra-hot summer the Duchesse never had that light a color, although its neighbor, Madame Joseph Schwartz , looked very much like your plant. My plant always had some pinkish roses that looked more like DdB, but the majority were still white to palest pink. Ingrid |
