| I have rather ugly brownish tiles round my house, and am looking for a rose that will look good against them I had Westerland climbing against the house, and it looked wonderful. But I was advised to remove the bed next the house after having it underpinned. I tried Mary Mckillop, but it was too pink. Now I have Ashram, but it looks flat. I'm not crazy about what Jeri calls the 'military look' either, but could put up with that if the colour was better. It actually looks better in the photo than it does in reality. I think, colourwise, Angele Pernet would be good, but don't know how it performs. I would welcome other suggestions too.. |

| How much room do you have in this bed? I would think something soft and billowy, and also rather taller, would distract from the tiles that you don't care for. If tea roses do well for you perhaps Mrs. Dudley Cross might be a consideration. The buff rose in the front, rather than that harsher color, would blend with the tile and soften it. If you can do Bourbons, Kronprinzessin Viktoria von Preussen might be good; mine hasn't gotten very large. Lady Hillingdon might also be a good color. I would say nothing too dark or harsh, but rather soft and pale, would accent the tile best, especially if a bit of it were allowed to overhang the edge of the tile to soften the whole scheme even more. | Thanks, Ingrid. There's hardly any room at all. I forgot to add that to the post. The bed is 2 and a half feet wide, and in front of it there are steps going down to the garden. So really, I'm after a bush that's about 3-5' tall and no more than 3' wide. |

| What about a rose with the coloring of Distant Drums that is tan and purple? Cath |
|
| Thanks Cath, i like the look of Distant Drums and could see it working, but unfortunately it isn't available here. |
|
| Lafter might be the right color but probably not the right size. |
|
| Perhaps Abbaye de Cluny, Tamora, or Easy Does It might work for you. AdeC might get a little large, but Tamora should definitely be the right size. I love all three roses. Here's a pic of Abbaye de Cluny, a Romantica, which may sell under a different name in Australia. Diane |

| Perle d'Or??? Might be too tall and wide, but if it fits, it's such a good repeater . . . Jeri |
|
| Actually, I think Ingrid's suggestion of 'Lady Hillingdon' is a great one. Jeri |

| Thankyou all for your suggestions. Porkpal, i like the colouring of Lafter but it doesn't appear to be available here, and is too big I'd say. Diane, I really like the look of 'easy does it', and the size is perfect but it doesn't seem to be available here either, but I will search further. And A de C doesn't seem to be available here. I've tried Tamora elsewhere in the garden, but like all the other DA's I've tried, it did very poorly. Hardly a leaf on it most of the time. Yes, Jeri, I think both P d"Or and Lady H would be too big. I've found roses in this garden exceed the bounds set by HMF and the nursery I buy from. If I had the money, I'd get rid of the tiles, but there are acres of them! |

| Hi titian, I discovered that Abbaye de Cluny is sold in Australia as Fiona Stanley. I wasn't able to find Easy Does It available in the sources I checked in Australia, but another rose from Kordes called Aprikola is available in Australia. It's a little bit like EDI. I found it on Treloar Roses in Australia. I love hunting things down--hope you don't mind. Good luck. Diane |

| Hi Diane, No, I don't mind you hunting things down, I think it's lovely of you. I did look for it under Fiona Stanley, but no nurseries came up that stocked it. But Aprikola looks lovely, and very suitable. Treloar have Soul Mate and Augusta Luise too, so that makes ordering very simple. And I daresay in a year or two they'll have Twilight Zone. We have had some good soaking rain at last, and it's amazing how the plants respond. I've been round with the fertiliser, and now just want another good soaking (anyone up there hear me?!) Under another post I asked you if you thought JC would look ok in a bed with Mutabilis and Ms Tillier. I want a bed in the tones of Mutabilis. I presently have Crepescule there and Buff Beauty. But I'm probably going to replace BB with Mrs Oakley Fisher, as BB grows soooo big, and doesn't flower much after spring. JC would be planted infront of MsT. Trish. |
