The collection just keeps growing!

I stopped by Chamblee's to pick up the last rose for the cemetery (Mrs. B R Cant). I brought a friend with me who wanted a couple of climbing roses. She liked the look of Souv. De La Maison, so I inquired if the nursery carried the climbing version. They said they would check out in the "discontinued" greenhouse. They did indeed. We asked the price and my jaw dropped when we were told that it was $2.50.

I immediately started salivating.

So I hustled my little self over to the greenhouse and it was as if the heavens parted and angels sang when I discovered it was filled with OGR. I immediately got to work looking at all the different cultivars. All of it was great stuff, disease resistant and Texas loving. So I grabbed a Cramoisi Supeurieur, Louis Philippe, Lamarque, and Comtesse du Cayla for $2.50 each. If I had more money to spend I probably would have bought them all. The list of OGR they carried was as follows:

Cl. Souv De La Malmaison
Antoine Rebe
Louis Philippe
Cramoisi Supeurieur
Comtesse du Cayla
Lamarque
The Green Rose

So along with roses for relatives and friends, I walked away with a total of 8 roses today for $56. All one gallon, potted, established plants.

If you can make it out there I would highly suggest taking advantage of the sale pricing. It is too cheap to believe.

Josh

Oh, wow, oh wow...dreams of being set loose in Chamblee's greenhouse full of $2.50 roses...!

'Course I'd need to sell my car & rent a SEMI...

Good thing it's too far. You did good, Josh, wonderful roses--they're going to be so fine next spring--congratulations & happy Thanksgiving :-)

What, are you trying to torture us?!

What a streak you are having. Lucky , lucky cemetary. Lucky, lucky roses having a great home to go to.

There is just no way anything could surpass this. They might as well have given them away, and with that size of plant you'll see results much sooner than with a band. My SdlM from them took off like gangbusters and I hope you'll see the same result, Josh.

Yeah, $2.50 hardly pays for the pot & soil, let alone a great mature own-root ogr.

oooo, you lucky dog! Hey, take orders & with a modest commission (plus a discount for special friends, yukyuk ;-) you'll go far, young man.

Waaaa I so wish I could take advantage of such a sale!

Hmm how big of a truck would all of us jealous SoCal people have to rent to fit us AND all the roses we could pack in?

Oh, Josh, you are well and truly addicted! But I do understand the excitement. I love a good bargain rose!

I wonder if an email to Mr. Chamblee couldn't convince him to ship the roses to you all. I'm sure he would be more than happy to move the stock out and put the money in his pocket. Maybe send a check with an order list?

Josh, don't see how you got out with only 8 roses......I was there a couple of weeks ago - went with a couple of friends, they got about 12 and I filled up the rest of the truck. Got so many we couldn't fit the pansies in from Hand Nursery. There were so many wonderful ones, and so cheap, I just kept adding them to the pile. You need to get Mme. Berkeley - I got 3 of them. The one I have is so graceful and was just loaded with blooms before the freezes hit. Then I went to the greenhouse - and got more. Josh, next time you are by there, go on Hwy. 64 out by the David Austin office [I had to go back to pick up pansies from nearby Hand Nursery.......got the first catalog out of the box that had just arrived that morning] and go to Hand Nursery - a really wonderful nursery that has the most beautiful and different pansies anywhere. My friend and I filled the truck up again. Tyler is such a fun place to shop! If you like Mexican food, try Mercados - it is THE best!! Mr. Hand, who lives across the street from the Hand Nursery, sells roses in his front yard on the honor system - you just put your money in a jar. He was selling roses @ $5 each in huge containers. My friend got 6 Knockouts, I got a Fragrant Cloud, Pink Peace and Belindas Dream - all big and healthy. If you haven't seen the big municipal rose garden, you are missing a treat - they also have a couple of "idea gardens" that are lovely. Tyler is my favorite place for road trips! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Congrats on your new roses, Josh. You got some great ones!
Tyler is indeed a great place to visit. Years ago, I lived just down the road in Palestine, TX. Of course back then I didn't know what an OGR was nor did I care.
I've gotten quite a few roses from Chamblee's over the years since those days. And they've done great. My happiest find was a Basye's Blueberry there one fall for only a few dollars as they discontinued carrying that fine rose as they continue to put more emphasis on modern roses. I think I smiled all the way home that day. Once I bought a Paul Neyron from Chamblee's that turn out to be a stellar performer over the the years. And back when they used to carry it, I left Chamblee's with an arm load of Pink Gruss an Aachen roses that to this day are the pride of my garden.

Have a good Thanksgiving!

Randy

Judith,

Does Chamblee carry Mme. Berkeley? If so I totally missed it!

Randy,

They had Gruss an Aachen but I didn't see the Pink variety. I was very tempted by it!
