I would like to buy a gold rose for a neighbor. Preferably not an Austin, with scent, and from Burlington. She loves "Gold Medal" and I think already has that one on order from somewhere, I would like to find something either similar colors or that would look nice in a row of them. Any thoughts?

Hmmm...sorry, Kippy, the only "gold" I have is Golden Celebration and I don't think it would fit the bill. Besides being BS prone it gets pretty huge. There have to be more though and I'm sure others will come up with some better ones.

South Africa? Love this rose! Lesley

Lesley, I love that rose and it looks like the one she fell in love with that mom was given some of for her birthday. Any idea who sells it? Seil, I would give her my GC, but i think it is too big and a bit too light colored too.

Kippy: Take a look at Whisky Mac to see if it fits. Cheers, Nancy

Sutter's Gold is a great rose that I'd love to find again somewhere. My mom used to grow it. Fantabulous blooms and even better scent.

Sheila's Perfume? Burling usually carries Soleil d'Or but it is not every gardener's rose:)

Either the classic Arthur Bell or Legrice's masterpiece, Allgold (true, non-fading gold). I agree, South Africa is also a good one. Or, if you could get your hands on Golden Chersonese or the ecae hybrid, Helen Knight, a pair of fabulous Asian yellows with clear golden blooms (only once tho').

Chamblees is going to sell South Africa in the spring - I was just there and they didn't have any, but you might contact them to find out when they will.

Whisky Mac and Sutter's Gold are both excellent roses and fragrant as well, but they fade to a very pale color, almost white in the hot weather. They are only gold in the cool of spring and fall. Rosefolly

Kippy...my South Africa is from Palatine. This rose has been so outstanding here, but I am in Louisville,KY. I would still encourage you to look into it and its performance in your area. Everyone who visits my garden asks about this rose and I consider it gold, not yellow. It holds color perfectly in hot weather and is so healthy. Never without a bloom. Good Luck.....Lesley

How about Jeri Jennings? Burling carries her. Plus you can tell your neighbor you know the person for whom the rose was named. Melissa

I hate to say this but GOLDEN CELEBRATION has the best golden color that I've ever seen on a rose. Graham Thomas comes close but GC's color is much deeper and the repeat bloom is better. Charlotte is a light golden yellow and very easy to grow. So is the modern floribunda Julia Child. Among the Old Garden Roses there is Duchesse d'Auerstadt, but I've never grown it.

Thank you all for some great suggestions!! I think Amber Queen, Whiskey Mac and Shutters Gold are more her style. I might have to get Jeri Jennings . Now to check and see if Burlington has any of these in stock I love Duchess d'Auerstadt and I hope I can buy a couple of roses from Green mantle in the spring. I have a couple I would like from Heirloom and Rogue Valley too. Thanks again

Looking at the variety of petal forms for Duchess d'Auerstadt on HMF, I find it hard to believe they are all the same rose. All quite lovely, but not alike.

Strike it Rich is a very good gold for me. The gold doesn't fade in our heat, but it does blush with more red as it ages. Scent is fairly strong; heavy bloomer; tall, vigorous and very heat tolerant here.
