FINALLY I've ordered Young Lycidas

I've been lusting after this rose since the moment I heard about and saw it on the internet, but for some reason, one being space, I never ordered it. I also balked at the expense of ordering it from David Austen, and would have preferred it to be own-root. I've finally bitten the bullet and have ordered it bare-root from David Austin. I'm taking out Lavender Simplicity which, in spite of the lovely flowers, is rather gaunt and spare. So many people have raved about this rose that I just have to try it, although purple roses don't usually do well for me in the dry heat. The bummer is having to wait until it is deemed to be the proper time for planting, which will be January at the earliest. Thank you (I think) for all of you who have enabled me with your gorgeous pictures and positive comments about YL.

I looked at pictures on HMF. It's very pretty! I hope it does well for you.

I ordered Queen Anne from David Austin. It was too new to get anywhere else, and it will be budded of course. Like you, I'd prefer own root.

Did you get a shipping date with your order? I think mine will be Spring.

We can edit posts now! cool!

Ingrid, YL THRIVES in my dry heat. Congratulations - you're in for a treat.

That's great Ingrid. I bet it will do well for you. Let us know.

He's definitely a yummy one, Ingrid. I hopa-hopa-hope he does wonderfully for you. Speaking of rootstocks, we had a speaker from Sarasota who is SERIOUS about growing David Austin roses (not always an easy thing to do here). She rates them for summer bloom (she MUST have lots of blooms even in the heat of summer). Anyway, the really shocking thing she said is that she has planted DA's bareroot and on Dr Huey (definite no-no's in FL) and hasn't lost a single one. She also grows them own-root & on Fort. I took her list and bought Lady of Megginch & Darcey Bussell - both Highly Recommended. I pick them up on Saturday. Can't wait. I just have no idea where to put Darcey. :((

Sherry, I'd be interested in seeing her list of Austins that do well in summer heat. Would you be willing to share it with us?

RE: FINALLY I've ordered Young Lycidas

'Young Lycidas'...Oh my, what an exquisite rose! The pictures I have found online remind me of a less rigid and much more graceful 'Rose de Rescht' but with 5x the bloom size.

Is anyone growing this in colder regions? How is its hardiness and performance?

Bellegallica, the list is an article in our Marion County Rose Society newsletter. I have emailed the editor to see if I can share it with non-members on the web. If not, I guess I'll just tell you the good ones. :))

I'll get back to you.

belle, I didn't get a shipping date (just that it will be between January and May), and just wrote them an e-mail requesting early January shipment.

harmony, that's excellent news! I can certainly give it all the dry heat it wants.

Sherry, I'm going to look up the roses you're getting. The new Austins must be a lot tougher if they can be grown on something other than fortuneana in your area.

Thank you Pam. I'm sure I'll be posting pictures as soon as the first bloom opens.

ispahan, I hope someone will have that information for you. I imagine it would be an even deeper purple in your cooler climate.

Hi Ingrid,

If possible, let me know how they respond to your email. The confirmation they sent me said the same thing (Jan-May), but I'd like mine in Jan if we have a choice.

Thanks

RE: FINALLY I've ordered Young Lycidas

I ordered Young Lycidas from David Austin in the U.K..
It arrived, along with Munstead Wood and another William Shakespeare 2000, almost two weeks ago. Luckily before I became ill!!!
It has a really good root system, and seven! canes.
I have planted it on the edge of the overhang of the apricot tree's branches. This means it will not have much morning sun, but will get the full blast of the afternoon sun.
The wrong way round I know, but in my tiny garden, there is no choice!
Ingrid, we will be able to compare how they do in each other's gardens.

I love my Young Lycidas and Munstead Wood. Initially, I was concerned that Young Lycidas's colour might not blend well with my other roses. However, this rose matches Munstead Wood really nicely!

I'm also impressed that YL can put up with the heat in the summer without fading and his blooms can last for a long time - much longer than MW. I'm glad to have him in my garden. I have to admit that YL blooms look much nicer during his initial stage.

Really Jumbojummy - you like them better during the initial stage? I find the early versus late blooms are like blooms from two different roses, and I like each equally as much. Blooms can literally last for weeks, and are always fragrant.

belle, they wrote me back the same day and said they would ship my rose Jan. 14, which is the first day they ship. I was happy to hear back from them so quickly.

Daisy, I do hope you're feeling better. The specimen you received sounds awesome. Yes, we'll definitely have to compare how our roses do.

jumbojimmy, I'm thrilled to hear how well YL does in the heat and that the blooms last. I don't have many roses which last for a long time.

harmony, your pictures are making me swoon! Thank you for showing the difference between the early and late blooms. For me they both seem equally gorgeous. I can barely wait to get this beauty into the ground and watch it grow and bloom.

Ingrid
