Since it is a dank, dark, gloomy Southern California day, I thought I'd bring the group some 'Sunshine.' 'Sunshine', a Polyantha is nominally not an "Antique," and certainly not an Old Garden Rose -- though one of its parents ('William Allen Richardson') certainly was. It does, though, seem to me that this is the place to discuss it. 'Sunshine' was Bred by Marcel Robichon (France, 1927), and introduced in the UK by Wm. Cutbush & Son in 1927. Pretty modern. Only, the blooms are close enough to those of W.A.R. that I think it's a good replacement for W.A.R. Supposed to be hardy to Z6 -- I'm not sure I'd try that. But you could grow it in a container, and move it out of harms way in real cold, I think. In our climate, I wouldn't even try to grow this rose on its own roots, but it came to us as a gift from a friend, budded, by Burling Leong (Burlington). After a couple of years, it's really starting to establish itself, and I don't think you could ask for anything lovelier. OH -- and it has its fragrance from W.A.R. Jeri

And that certainly brought a ray of sunshine into my day!

I'm glad! Jeri

It really is a happy little rose! Its also nice to see yours blooming :) My Sunshine has already gone deep into its winter slumber. Tammy
|
To begin with, NOTHING goes into a winter slumber here (except R. arkansana). But less than a month ago, it was 98 deg. here, and we were officially (here, near the beach) the hottest place in the nation. Now, it's pouring in NoCal, and misting hopefully here. Crazy weather? You betcha. Jeri

I lived in Florida for 18 years and remember 12 months of green very well. I appreciate the change in seasons now, but when I walk out of the house at 7am to frost and snow I kind of miss it! But now I get to live vicariosly through everyone on GW :) Tammy

Very nice rose, Jeri. Thanks for the photo. Diane

I wish I grew it. I think it would like it here. Sherry

Sherry, I think it probably would. Might even be, you could grow it on its own roots, because it does seem to like some warmth. I guess Burlington can't ship to FL, right? Jeri

Jeri, I fell for this rose when you posted it on Facebook and found out then that the only one who had it couldn't ship it. Oh, well, life is full of disappointments. :)) Sherry

Yeah. It is. But -- "Dum spiro, spero." As long as there are living plants of it, I suppose there's hope that one could be gotten to you. Jeri
|
What a beautiful soft golden yellow and pretty shape. I've really enjoyed the rose pictures you've posted Jeri. I'm afraid you'll have to keep it up; many are unusual and new to me. Great fun! Ingrid

Jeri, you're right - as long as there is a living plant there's hope. Alas, I'm full up - at least until next fall. Fall is typically when my summer exasperation gets good and grumpy! Sherry

I love the shape of the blossom. It's very playful and reminds me a little of the Blush Boursault blooms I get in spring. I like the different sizes of the petals and the way they curl and swirl.
