| Nope! It's not ORANGE. This rose was collected from the grave of a man named Orange Smith, who was a veteran of the American Civil War.
It seems to be a sport or seedling of 'Archduke Charles,' with fewer petals -- and it opens here better than the real A.C. does. I like "Orange Smith" a lot -- and wish I knew more about the man, Orange Smith. Jeri |

| 6th US Infantry would be Regular Army. There wasn't a lot of Regular Army in the Civil War. Orange Smith would have intentionally signed up to be a professional soldier, and would have been old enough to have gone to Mexico with Winfield Scott. The regimental history gives an idea of where he would have travelled, and the sorts of fighting he would have seen had he been with the regiment from the time he was 18 until the end of the Civil War. |

| Thanks! That connection to history is part of what makes these Found Roses so fascinating. They put us directly in touch with history. Orange Smith may well have come first come to CA with the Regiment, and returned later, to stay. His wife was b. 1843, d. 1907 but we don't know if they met in California, or elsewhere. She pre-deceased him by about 4 years. I wish I knew whether Orange had planted the rose for his Rachel, or whether George planted it for his parents. The roses in that old cemetery are disappearing, now, so I'm very glad to have this. Jeri |

| The shading on this rose is so beautiful. How nice to find out about the history of this man and his family. Ingrid |

| Is "Orange Smith" available for purchase anywhere? How do the foliage and growth compare to those of 'Archiduc Charles'? Thanks! |
|
| No Brent. But We Must Talk. I think its similarity to Archduke Charles makes it unlikely that anyone would place it in commerce. One day, in the Sacramento City Cemetery, we raced back and forth from this rose to several old plants of A.C. As far as we could see, in that informal "study," the difference between them was solely that this is a bloom with lower petal count. More study, of course, could reveal more. Some might think the lower petal count is a deficiency, but (and the petals MAY have more substance) in my climate, it is a virtue, as I have seen A.C. ball here -- something Orange Smith never does. | What an interesting name for the man to have! I love history and visiting cemeteries. This week we are going to visit my father in Front Royal, VA and may make a trip to Arlington. Its such a sad place, but at the same time makes you so proud to live in a Country that people are willing to die for. Do you happen the know of any historic cemeteries between Tennessee and Wash, DC that still have rose gardens? Tammy |
|
| No. That is not my territory. But the way to find cemeteries with roses in them is to visit a lot of cemeteries. Of course, you know that the roses of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA are famous -- and Lynchburg, VA, has both surviving and re-planted roses. Jeri |

| Thanks Jeri :) |

| Jeri, An Orange H C Smith born in Putnam, Illinois meets your criteria. If you want to pursue it try "Ancestry. com". They charge a fee for joining but our local library has it and we can use it there for free. Perhaps your library has it as well. Good luck in your search for information. Cath |
