Papa Gontier (Bermuda form) in the SF Bay

On impulse I bought Papa Gontier at the HRF forum in Florida. They have the Bermuda form. I don't know how different the Bermuda form actually is, except possibly for a few white flecks in the rose.

My question is actually about its resistance to PM. Does anyone grow Papa Gontier in the SF Bay area? If s can you tell me how resistant it is to powdery mildew in our area? I could not find any mention one way or the other on this forum, for either form.

Obviously I'm in Florida, but in my garden, where mildew can show up in the winter or early spring, I don't recall seeing it on this rose.

Malcolm, here in California something like half the teas (at my best guess) have moderate to severe problems with PM, while the others get little or no PM. I suspect this is different elsewhere. It is good to know that it is healthy in Florida. But while I'm waiting to hear from other gardeners with my particular conditions, let me ask you about the difference between Papa Gontier and Bermuda Papa Gontier. Is it pretty much just the flecks of white? Or are there other differences as well?

I don't know about BPG, whether it's a different rose or a close relative of PG. PG doesn't get mildew in my garden, which probably half of my roses do at one point or another. In my experience it's mildew resistant, or immune (and a great rose: good choice!).

P.S. We're right on the verge of real fall and no more roses. I was interested recently to see that PG had buds at about the same phase of development in two distinctly different shades: some were deep rose pink and others were creamy pale. I've seen this great a range of flower color on the same rose at different times of year, of course, but to have them show up simultaneously was new.

Rosefolly, Greggy Lowery could tell you more about the differences. The BRS is quite sure they have the "real" thing, in that it was brought from the UK under that name long ago. It does produce the white flecks on the otherwise red petals. Phillip Robinson was who said it was not the original, his proof being that he grew a different version of PG, which sported to 'Rainbow', a known historic sport of PG. But I've never grown his version of PG for comparison.

Malcolm, thanks. I'll ask Gregg the next time I see him. In any case, they sound enough alike that for all intents and purposes, they are the same.

Also I brought home Flamingo Gardens Tea. I read your comments on this rose in an earlier post, and I'm pleased that I obeyed the impulse to buy it. Mostly my rose decisions are long thought out. When I follow an impulse I frequently regret it. But with these two I am very happy. And I am also happy about Westside Road Cream Tea, a replacement for a rose I liked which died.

I am dubious about the Spineless Chestnut, but it mostly that I have no idea where I will plant it. Fortunately the Spineless is supposed to be a bit smaller than the regular chestnut.

Melissa, I am encouraged by your reply. I'm not going to worry too much about mildew with this rose.

I really like the spineless chestnut. Not quite as floriferous as the normal double form, but it definitely repeats, and the flowers are a deeper, nicer purple shade.
