Hi, I'm going to be working tomorrow in the San Diego area like every Friday, & I was wondering if there were any good places to pick up some DA's from? Thanks!

Have you tried Walter Andersen Nursery? They might have Austins. I adored that place, when I lived there.

Kniffings nursery out towards El Cajon. But wait for bare root season to start about mid December for the best selection and the best quality. Right now everything should be quite picked over, so don't go yet unless you hear of a sale. . . . Oh look -- these 6 are 40% off now, which makes them around $13 each. That's pretty cheap for Austins. Kathy

Hi Kathy, Thanks for letting me know about Kniffings! The only problem is El Cajon is a little to far for me to drive to, but if I get the extra time, I will try and get down there. Thanks also Melva for letting me know about Walter's. I went to their website and they only had two Austins listed though. I will have my laptop with me all day, so please let me know of any other great places to visit. Brian

Well then, letmesee here. I've been impressed with the roses overall at Tropic World Nursery in Escondido, but they don't have a website. Here's the contact info though. It's right on a frontage road to the I-15. Deer Springs Road offramp. It is fun to just browse there also -- big place -- lots of interesting stuff beyond roses. Tropic World Nursery 26437 N Centre City Pkwy Escondido CA 92026-7808 760-746-6108 And, I just got an email from Laguna Hills Nursery in Lake Forest that says all their roses are 60% off starting now. That would make them about $12. You may just want to wait until you get back here. They usually have a good group of Austins there, as you probably know. Kathy |

You are getting the bottom of the barrel now, the leftovers of the season, what's been picked through and picked over for months and what has been sitting in a pot on concrete or asphalt since March. A fresh, healthy plant makes a huge difference. Best off waiting for the new crop in late December.

You can't go by Walter Anderson's website because it doesn't accurately reflect what is on hand in the two nurseries. I agree it's slim pickings right now and also Kniffings has a much better selection of Austins than either Walter Anderson's sites. The Poway WA is larger and has more of a selection than the Point Loma one. Sometimes Armstrongs on Morena has a good selection of Austins early in the season but this varies from year to year.
