The "desert roses" of Socotran Island (off Yemen)

Many of us have heard of Rose of Sharon, moss roses, and I've even read about a French scientist whose last name is Rose Rosette.

So, to further our knowledge, you have just got to look at the pictures of the plants called "desert roses" on an island in the Indian Ocean, offshore Yemen and Somalia.

And we are allowed to wonder if any real roses might survive in the towns on that island.

Also what the blooms might look like on these trees.

These plants are growable here given the right conditions (no frost, no water most of the year, gritty soil, lots of heat). The flowers look similar to Oleander flowers. There are many hybrids in all several colors available.

Socotra is difficult to visit due to the presence of Somali pirates in the surrounding waters, visiting by boat is not recommended. It is part of Yemen, also not a particularly amenable place for tourists.

I am told the Dragon's Blood trees grow well in San Diego, CA -- so they would probably do well here, too.

I'd love to have one, but can't find one.

What a fascinating group of pictures. The "roses" looked rather comical in the first picture but rather attractive when in bloom.

Sad that the boys all looks so happy to get together for a photo while the girls need to hide their faces. It must have been a male photographer. I remember a story about a friends aunt in the Middle East. When they got their first TV and the news came on, she ran to get her headcovering to hide her face from the anchorman on the screen.

Beautiful Island. Those plants are really interesting.

The plants have an alien look to them because they're so different from what we're used to seeing.

Thank you, Ann. What a fabulously interesting place. I love to see it. Sadly, between the pirates and the Yemeni politics, it isn't a nice place to visit at the moment. But perhaps in a few years...

The dragon tree of Soctra is Dracaena cinnabari. The common one seen in Southern California is the similar Dracaena draco, from the Canary Islands. Here is a magnificent example in my neighborhood:

It is possible to determine the age of the Dragon tree by counting the branches. This is because they produce a pair of new branches every time they bloom, and after a certain age, they bloom reliably every year. Here's a big one at the San Diego Botanical Garden:

Keep looking, Jeri. I found mine at Home Depot. They can rot and fall over in rainy winters and so must have excellent drainage.
