How do you know when a rose has died?

I received a potted Annie Laurie McDowell this season, a little thing with tiny little leaves. She was quite upset at her move and her leaves wilted and fell. I kept watering her and looking after her and for a bit it looked like she was putting out new growth. Now, she has turned black with not leaves and is just sticks in a pot. I haven't pulled her up yet out of the hope her roots are still alive, but is my hope futile? How do you know when a rose has truly kicked the bucket? Josh

I think Jeri is right. Sorry, Josh. Made me think of a 'Valentine' rose I had/have though. Several years ago, after it got fully settled in, we had an especially harsh summer, drought etc., and I didn't give it the care it needed since it was planted in a difficult to reach area of my property. At the end of the summer it looked totally dead. I cut it to the ground and then dug up the root ball and tossed it. The next spring, two plants came back apparently from some parts of the root I had missed. Now it's a beautiful set of "twin" plants happily growing out there. It's a fighter for sure and I give it a lot more respect that before. Randy |

I think so too but I wanted to say that sometimes a rose in the ground will come back from the roots.

I had exactly the same thing happen with a plant of ALM. I put it in the ground and it promptly died. I have a new plant now and I'm going to keep it in a pot a lot longer. I'm sorry it happened to you as well, but I do thank you for sharing. Now I don't feel like so much of a Bad Gardener. Rosefolly

I got Annie as a band and she wasn't the most vigorous of growers for me and she died over her first winter. I would contact the vendor and leet them know she didn't make it.

I leave "dead" roses in the ground but plant another next to the black sticks. This practice has often brought the sticks (well their underground parts) back to life.

The roots have to be somewhat established in order for the plant to come back from the roots.

Over the years I have had a number of dead roses come back to life (not because I knew that it could happen, but because I did not get around to removing them).

I'm so sorry this happened, Josh, because this rose is not so easily replaced. I'm glad, though, that rosefolly mentioned her experience with it, which will prompt me not to plant mine in the ground for a good long time. Ingrid

Ingrid, I'm glad you can learn from our experiences! I think I'll keep mine around for a while to see if it comes back from the roots. Josh

I have a Kordes rose called Caramel Antique that looked worse than a blackened doornail after our horrible January 2013. I was joyfully preparing to dig it up (have been threatening to do this for several years), but I got distracted by other spring chores, and by the time I got back to Caramel it was turning green and putting out new leaves, blast it. Anyway, I hope something similar happens to your rose, Josh, because, I guess, it's not over till it's over (not sure what that means). Diane

If the roots have some life, and they don't get overwatered then maybe your little rose may live. Tiny roses are fragile creatures. I had such a rose. I kept it in a plastic bag that I kept from getting too cold and added some co2 . I hope she comes back.
